For apparently greatly offending this woman (lighthearted)

Out with my baby (almost 12 months), walking down the street and I call my baby by a nickname. This nickname apparently offended a passerby to the extent they confronted me about 'verbally abusing my baby'.

What did I call my baby you ask? Shnuggle butt. The well known deviation of the also common stinky butt.

Wish I'd had a witty comeback but I was so confused I was speechless 🤣.

My oldest DS is 24 now, up until about 2 years ago his nickname was Knobhead. He was even saved in my phone as knobhead 😂😂

I like to think I'd be quick enough to feign shock and shriek 'OMG WHERE'S MY BABY!' but the reality is I'd have just looked at him like Hmm

All I could think to say was affirm and say ‘it is!’ Pre-school adjacent to where we were walking but perhaps he thought I was mentally ill or something walking around with an invisible toddler! Or I could have said ‘he’s right there can’t you see him??’

drivingmeoffmybroom · 20/11/2024 18:24

Haha he wouldn't have liked me calling my dd "ratbag" then! Even my own mum moaned about that nickname 🤣

tobee · 20/11/2024 18:25

Quite a lot of these randoms we meet seem to congregate on Mumsnet.

When I worked in Tesco I once had a woman come up to me and berate me because the gluten free fish fingers weren't in the vegetarian section. I'm used to the public being weird. But this woman I did indeed just have 'ok, she's an absolute nutter' just going through my head 😅

I was in Tesco today and a woman told me she was vegetarian. But eats chicken, duck and prawns...

I was out with toddler DS & my DF, waiting at a zebra crossing.

"Come on fartypants" I said, & a stranger said I shouldn't call a baby that.

Dad said "She's talking to me".

😂

I was once on the bus,and said to my (then) 3 year old dd 'come on Gladys,it's our stop'

I thought the woman just to my left was going to give herself a heart attack-she was full on screaming at me that I shouldn't have called her Gladys

She's not called gladys-but she did go by that name along with mavis, beryl,Phyllis, tinkerbell and Ethel

She's 17 now and isn't too bothered by her baby nicknames

It doesn't seem to have stunted her in anyway-she just laughs about it

What a weirdo! Imagine if that had been her actual name (lovely name in my opinion), how horrible for a child to experience that reaction about their name from a stranger.

LOL she’d be horrified if she heard what I call my 6 year old. Mr Stink, Stink Bomb and Stinker to name a few! He finds them all hilarious.

But in a couple of years time he won’t. They became me what u call them

Oh god. I call DDog monkey butt and stinkle bum. She’d be calling the RSPCA on me…

My DDog has many names- the name he had when we rescued him, his new 'proper' name (he didn't answer to the old one anyway) and multiple nicknames. We were once sitting outside a cafe with him (as part of his training to get used to being around people) and when we were ready to go I said to DH 'You get the dog and I'll take the cups in'. Someone passing by made a thing about saying what a shame it was that he didn't even have a name (presumably because I called him 'the dog') and how we should name him immediately etc. A really odd conclusion to draw, but also surely most people would see that he is clearly well treated and probably doesn't give a monkeys what we call him.

I'd love that. Really fuck with his head and start leaning over and cooing at an invisible toddler Grin I can just picture his face wondering whether it's him or you imagining things.

I was once in the supermarket with my 4 month old and a woman said to me “ this is a ridiculous time of morning to have a baby out “ .
it was 9 15 am and I’d just done the school run

I was at a wedding and a relative of the other family was there with a cute squishy 8 month old. I introduced myself to them and then said to the baby ‘well hello lovely baby’ in a baby voice.

I was firmly told I must not speak to him like that, they’re not ‘doing baby nonsense’

I assume I was supposed to say ‘how do you do’ and shake his tiny hand.

This was years ago, I wonder how he’s doing now? 🤔

Oh my god. It actually helps babies learn, distinguish important sounds and feel good about language.

I am so annoyed by these people and I wasn’t even there!!

SilverBlueRabbit · 20/11/2024 19:13

I called DS1 'My baby monster'. Suffice it to say- it was affectionate. I had a colleague in our US office actually approach me with an HR representative present to say that she found it profoundly offensive that I called my precious baby this and she felt that i needed some sort of MH support.

I laughed.

That did not go down well either.

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 20/11/2024 19:17

I had a woman have a real go at me for calling my son Shorty when he was younger, its just an affectionate name where I'm from. I still call him shorty now he's mid 20s and 6ft 3, and towers over me 🤣

Pherian · 20/11/2024 19:34

Did this deranged loony toon think you personally had control over this 😂

I greeted my mam in her Care Home "Hello, Old Bean!" and another inhabitant huffily queried me with "Old?!" My mam was 94 and it's just a fecking phrase anyway. Some people are just itching to be offended.

Same woman didn't have all her marbles
She once walked up to my friend and said it was disgusting that a granny was trying to breastfeed her gd
My mate lost it with her-She was mum not granny
She was known for it apparently,no dementia, just a nasty cow

Dontlletmedownbruce · 20/11/2024 20:30

On the other extreme my friend was in a waiting room and a Mum was smiling at her baby saying 'who's a cute little fucker, you're a cute little fucker!'

Totally off topic but a coeliac friend attended an event and as for an alternative to the standard food that was on offer. They brought her a cheese sandwich. When she pointed out that wasn’t something she could eat, they brought her a slice of cheesecake.

We had an away day and my vegan lunch (clearly marked vegan) was a sandwich with no margarine on and dry tuna. With a packet of mini cheddars. I had to eat my emergency pot noodle. I mean it's not as if caterers can find out what people with allergies or beliefs eat is it.
