Should I go to GP?

I have some sort of stomach bug. Feel awful, barely eating or drinking, diarrhoea and constant nausea (but haven't vomited), plus all the symptoms of a chest infection. It's day 4. My husband says I should get checked out but I am under the impression that there is little they would do as it is probably viral.

Would this be a complete waste of a GP appointment? I have to admit that some reassurance, even if they can't diagnose/prescribe something, might be helpful

YABU - waste of gp time
Yanbu - get checked out

YABU. Don't go spreading your stomach bug at the GPs. Call NHS 111 if you're concerned at this stage.

Fireworknight · 15/11/2024 07:27

Yes, contact the gp. If you’ve had diarrhoea for four days, you could be getting dehydrated, especially if you’ve you not drank much. It may sound trite, but can be serious.

Also, you’re day four and not getting better.

coffeesaveslives · 15/11/2024 07:29

I would ring and ask for phone consult - don't go down there and spread your lurgy.

TriangleLight · 15/11/2024 07:29

Don’t worry about eating, but make sure you drink. Get dioralyte or the like to make sure you keep properly hydrated.

Sounds miserable, I hope you feel better soon

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/11/2024 08:26

It sounds grim but (assuming you’re generally fit and well) I don’t think a GP will do much other than advising you to stay well hydrated.

sipping dioralyte throughout the day is the best way of doing this.

Hope it eases soon

CitiesInDust · 15/11/2024 08:27

If you think you have a chest infection then it’s not viral.

stopringingme · 15/11/2024 08:37

@Bulkypeepants

Have you done a covid test as I tested positive last week and had a lot of what you describe and more, including the diarrhea and feeling sick.

Bulkypeepants · 15/11/2024 10:15

Ok, executive decision to hold off the GP for now and will see how I am on Monday. I haven't done a test but I suspect I have covid and so it would have been a phone consult anyway.

Good, don’t go spreading it that’s for sure. Phone call would happen within about half an hour of doing the e consult at our GP. Hope you feel better soon, sickness is the worst 🤮

I'd do this online https://111.nhs.uk/

Get help for your symptoms - NHS 111

Notsure94 · 15/11/2024 10:39

I believe they usually don't do anything unless it's more than five days with symptoms. Then they might take stool sample to see if it's a nasty one that needs antibiotics or something reportable like Campylobacter.

Did that, told me to go to the GP!

Those symptoms can be managed at home.
You’ve got what a lot of other people currently have and I can’t believe you were considering a GP appointment

If you need advice:-
NHS website
OTM pharmacist
111

only just saw your reply to me. Hope you are feeling much better now! if 111 says go to GP then I would contact GP and say am contacting at advice of 111.

Have you tried OTC remedies to start? Imodium instants and dioralyte, or any electrolyte drinks, my local newagents stocks loads of electrolyte drinks these days, wowhydrate is very good. All a GP can really offer is these which you can buy yourself, and would cost more via prescription. If you feel dehydrated, not passing urine, weak, headaches you cant get rid of, excessively tired, then A&E for dehydration would be where to go. The GP cant really help you.

Chest is probably viral, if you start coughing up green or yellow phlegm then get seen as you may require treatment.
