To confront tablet thief?

Dsis is distraught that her tablet was stolen from her in a public place, with their work details and a lot of confidential info on it. She managed to track it using a device tracker to a house near me down to the house number, contacted police non emergency services only to be told it's not urgent. It's really important to her and I really want to get it back but I'm also worried about the best way to do it safely. It's so important to her and linked to her wellbeing too in some ways.

Yabu - Contact them to ask for it back somehow
Yanbu - It's not safe, leave it alone

I'd be round like a shot to be honest.

KimberleyClark · 14/11/2024 18:04

I’m not sure. They’re bound to deny all knowledge and then what can you do?

Curtainqueen · 14/11/2024 18:09

Last week someone knocked on my door saying they left their headphones on the train and the app said they were in my house somewhere. I don’t go anywhere on the train and had no idea what headphones he was talking about. I’d be careful before confronting them with regards how accurate these trackers are.

Suimai · 14/11/2024 18:10

How close are the nearest houses to the one it’s been tracked to as it’s not 100% accurate. My oh is a taxi driver and gets phones left in the cab all the time. There’s another taxi driver with a cab 6 houses away and I can’t tell you the amount of times we’ve had people even drunk/on drugs hammering on our door early hours Sunday morning asking where tf their phone is, when they’ve actually left it in the taxi in the house down the street, but it’s been tracked to our house. Right now my children are home but only one of them is showing up as the accurate address on find my iPhone

ThianWinter · 14/11/2024 18:10

I wouldn't confront them, you don't know what kind of situation you're walking into. Leave it to the police, even though it's not considered a priority.

fiorentina · 14/11/2024 18:12

It may not be exactly accurate so although I’d be tempted to go around I’d not be certain it’s the right property.

DreadPirateRobots · 14/11/2024 18:12

These things are very rarely accurate to a specific address - I have three trackers in my house right now, and they all show differently - and even if it is the right address, what exactly are you planning to do when they say "sorry, don't know anything about any tablet"?

SunshineAndFizz · 14/11/2024 18:16

Keep pestering the police to look into it. I wouldn't risk it myself, who knows who these people are.

Attelina · 14/11/2024 18:27

You don't know if they bought it in good faith from the thief or it was a gift from the thief or if they are the thief and likely to cave your head in.

Londonbrainfog · 14/11/2024 19:11

True, I doubt anything would even come out of going round even if it was the right address, which isn't even a given by the sound of it... just so frustrating
