I'm employing a young girl of 18 just to help me out some evenings with - playing with my kids ( 2 and 4 ) while I cook. Helping me give them dinner, getting them ready for bed with me/ then clearing up any toys / getting them to clear up toys / as well as clearing up after they have eaten.

The idea is that I'll put them to bed and she can sort the kitchen in the meantime, then she'll go home. It's a couple of hours a day. Is that a reasonable wage ?

Absolutely. I'd say it's generous even.

rumshed · 14/11/2024 16:16

Too much then ?

It’s too much as in it is way above NMW, but you’re offering very limited hours so that makes up for it.

I would imagine she will snap your hand off.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 14/11/2024 16:33

£12.50 would be adequate I think.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 14/11/2024 16:35

I think £15/hour gross in the south east for awkward hours is decent. I wouldn’t go lower. Is it every weekday?

mondaytosunday · 14/11/2024 16:50

That's what cleaners charge pretty much so yes, seems right.

rumshed · 14/11/2024 16:59

Yeah I thought because it's just a couple of hours 3 times a week. If it was more hours, I would pay less.

I’m from this area and I wouldn’t go so far to say it’s generous.

SleepToad · 14/11/2024 17:04

I love the people saying that's too much. The person is taking care of children...so that's a responsibility. It's not great hours if you were looking for someone older. It's a part time job for someone at school who you are trusting in your house. You need incentive of high pay to keep them elsewise you will affect the kids chopping and changing

kiraric · 14/11/2024 17:07

It's a good amount especially as she won't most likely be paying any tax on it.

We pay a bit less than that - £12/hr for babysitting in London and that's someone qualified in sole charge - but this is quite limited hours so seems reasonable.

rumshed · 14/11/2024 17:09

Yeah she's not in sole charge at all.

Whatever it's fine, better a bit more than less. It's not very good hours in the evening. It wouldn't suit everyone.

Whether it's awkward hours depends on what else the 18 year old is doing.
If it's a couple of hours straight after college, that's really convenient. If it's on her way home, or near either home or college, that also means little extra travel involved. For some sixth formers, this could be their ideal job!

That's a low babysitting wage for London. Is that a weekday hourly rate?

It's for evening babysitting - it isn't especially low around here, it's the going rate. It's what they asked for.
