To feel fed up with my line manager

I've worked for this person for several years and before that alongside them in a different role.

Over the last few years things have deteriorated completely. The person has mental health issues which I do feel very empathetic with, having struggled myself. But also I'm exhausted and fed up with the complete double standards. They completely fail to give any direction and i dont feel at all managed or supported. Despite us all being told to be in the office certain days, they a very rarely in. Scheduling 30 minute meetings in the middle of the day and failing to come in at all, despite telling others they should do just that, and forcing someone to take long term leave last year because a family issue meant she couldn't come into the office.

We never know if they will be in or not. Communication is hopeless, and we often have to check their diary to see if they will be in. We have our flagship event next week and they haven't been in all week and barely over the last few weeks at all. We've barely heard from them. They are lucky we are all proactive and can largely just crack on with it, but the pressure as a result is placed on the rest of the team, but absolutely not acknowledged.

They have seemingly just completely taken a step back from the role and the team because they are not coping. I want to be empathetic to their issues, but also feel it neede to be raised and managed properly, as it's impacting on us all. AIBU and completely heartless.

What about management above this person? Have you approached them to explain that they aren’t doing their job well?

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast not recently. Last year i raised the issue of mangement with her line manager, which fell on deaf ears.

Raise it again with more senior management

i would take this to hr. the double standard isn't fair on you or your colleagues. however she might not be getting much support herself - if her own line manager is disengaged.

I would suggest bringing it up with your line manager first if you think she'd be receptive. Looks less like you're going over her head.

Maybe just say it'd be really helpful to know when she'll be in the office so you can sync your days as you find f2f catch ups helpful or something? Or you've noticed your meetings haven't taken place recently, would it help to schedule them at a more convenient time etc. Then if nothing changes you can escalate it knowing you've followed the correct steps.
