Right of way

Name changed because I'm embarrassed!
I strongly suspect I was wrong but ..
Tonight driving home in the dark, I turned right off a busy main road onto my street, the road has a slight bend so you can't see what's coming immediately, there's also cars parked which narrows the road significantly.
As soon as I was on the road there was a car. I had stopped straight away and imagined they would have pulled in to a large space but they continued to drive right up to me past the space.
I refused to reverse back out on to the main road, we had a stand off, I turned my engine off.
Eventually they reversed into the gap, literally a cars length behind them so I could pass by.
I only passed my text a year ago and also hate driving in the dark. To me this was the most sensible and reasonable thing to do. If it was a reverse I definitely would have just pulled into the space no matter who officially had the right of way.

I agree with you - reversing onto a main road would be madness.

Littletreefrog · 13/11/2024 20:22

Yes they are an idiot. People do this to me on the street I have to go down to work. I do think people just don't engage brain while driving these days.

BillPurchase · 13/11/2024 20:25

Theres no such thing as right of way in the highway code, its more a case of giving way.

rightofway · 13/11/2024 20:34

Phew! I really thought I'd be getting a telling off from you all!
Because there was a parked van to the left of me I would have had to have reversed onto the main road facing the wrong direction, or I wouldn't have been able to see the traffic, it just seemed crazy to do that.

I know I have a lot of learning to do as I did an intense course over 10 days so not much experience yet and have only really driven in the dark last winter, as I've had no reason to drive late at night

It would have been most sensible for traffic flow for them to have pulled into the space.

I recommend Ashley Neal's videos on youtube. He's good about real-world driving situations and instructs instructors as well as learners.

Nobody has right of way, but they should have given way to you. From your description the space was on their side of the road?

rightofway · 13/11/2024 20:54

@SnakesAndArrows the space was on my side of the road but because of parked cars it was impossible for me to get to as he continued to drive right up to me.
If he had stopped when I turned in I definitely would have done that.

@BogRollBOGOF that's totally what I thought and thank you, I'll check it out

I think you technically give way if the obstacle is on your side. In single lane roads it’s usually by common consent but some people are arses, and you would have been very silly to reverse into the main road- the other driver was clearly being an idiot (not the word I would use!) to try and force you backwards.

Catza · 13/11/2024 21:13

Highway code says you should not be reversing into the main road (200-203). That's the end of that, really.
