To think that people using GoFundMe for personal life choices, like weddings or holidays, is tacky?

Everyone seems to be crowdfunding everything these days. AIBU to think it’s inappropriate to ask people to fund personal indulgences?

Agreed. But you don't have to donate. You do you.

I’ve not noticed this, maybe it’s the circles you mix in?

Very tacky, I would royally take the piss if I knew anyone doing this, wouldn't donate and would seriously consider cutting off the friendship

Katherineryan1986 · 13/11/2024 18:39

Absolutely - it's pure greed and entitlement. Save up for things the same as most other people do.
I don't see why these people expect others to pay the vet bill or for their kids Xmas presents.

daisychain01 · 13/11/2024 18:41

Why start a judgemental thread that you know everyone will agree with? Of course raising money for lifestyle choices is tacky.

and your point is?

And people too tight to buy travel insurance and come a cropper.

Bigcat25 · 13/11/2024 18:45

100 percent. I had a client who set up one for a downpayment for her and her husband so they could ''give her parents their space back."

Exactly! My annual travel insurance even with health issues is about £50 for Europe.

if people can’t be bothered to insure themselves for a week’s holiday for £12-20, they are idiots.

So kind of them 🙄 🙄

Saw one a few years back where someone was trying to get funding for a post graduate qualification. No reason behind it. Just didn't want to pay for it/get in debt. Made me cringe for them.

I do see more and more of them. They get a bit tedious.

x2boys · 13/11/2024 18:52

Well yes but who would be daft enough to donate ?
Anyone csn set up a go fund me ,it doesn't mean they will get many donations

Womblewife · 13/11/2024 18:52

When people stop donating this nonsense will stop. I saw one a year back for someone wanting a new kitchen because they love to bake … wtf?

Oh yes. Who knew being shitfaced abroad with a heart condition and poorly controlled diabetes would be a bad idea.

TomatoAuberginePotatoTurnip · 13/11/2024 18:56

I can't imagine being so shameless as to ask other people to cough up for a holiday or a wedding.

Absolute CF's!

Ebabllisstggoffor · 13/11/2024 18:58

There’s a family that run a Motorhome forum, who regularly ask for money to fund their lifestyle.

ComtesseDeSpair · 13/11/2024 18:59

I don’t really give it any headspace tbh. I probably wouldn’t donate anything unless I knew the person in question really well, but it’s entirely optional and doesn’t require anything of me beyond a mental “nope” or “yep” before I scroll on. I do, though, prefer the GoFundMes which are straightforward and brazen about just wanting money for a celebration to the manipulative ones which wheedle about wanting to take an ill child to Disneyland and try to play on people’s heartstrings.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/11/2024 19:02

I know exactly what you mean, but we are desperate for a new kitchen (with induction hob) and need to extend out (with bi-fold doors) for the poor three dogs.
What else can one do?

Oh no, the cleaner has just said I will have to replace the saucepans if we get an induction hob. What a nightmare.😱, we're off to Turkey next week for teeth, butt m-lift and the whole caboodle. It's just one thi g after another.

I'll get the gardener to post the gofundme link later.

What a year...sigh.

Foy19 · 13/11/2024 19:05

What's even worse is when the crowdfunder is left to run indefinitely, months after the event...seems very grabby to me.

Grassgreenblue · 13/11/2024 19:12

Our old batshit neighbour set one up after she set her house on fire (by mistake!)

Its a council House so no building insurance needed but it would have been about £3/4 a week for contents

Within hours, she'd set one up as she was a single parent (bollocks-she lived with her boyfriend), 3 kids (all over 18 and one moved out and refuses to speak to her) and she could afford to run that crappy ring doorbell, takeaways every single night, taxis everywhere if he wasn't around to take her anywhere in their expensive car, and expensive parcels delivered (i started to take them in as she refused to answer the door but stopped when she turned on us),but couldn't afford the pennies a week to pay to cover her arse

The gofundme was for 2k (they got £500) with big daily mail sad face and a sob story which pulled in donations of clothes (which they sold),tech (ditto) food (which she binned) and god knows what else

There are a row of about 5 houses not far from my work and at least once a year, they seem to have a fire in one of them and up goes the gofundme-they never seem to have insurance

I pay my bloody insurance every year-i insist we take it out when dp moans about the cost (every year) as I'd rather die than beg for money

Lemonadeand · 13/11/2024 19:22

I think it’s ok to set up a crowd funder on behalf of someone else who is facing some kind of hardship. Or, for example, someone locally is crowd funding for a special wheelchair for their teenage daughter who has a degenerative condition.

But setting one up for yourself is not ok.

Hateam · 13/11/2024 19:27

I feel.more annoyed with the idiots who donate.

It's greedy and entitled as well as vulgar and tacky.

I never contribute to anything like that. I can't understand who does.

Portakalkedi · 13/11/2024 19:31

There are hard faced idiots aplenty,, but I wonder who on earth gives money to these grabbing whingers? If you can afford to give money away there are many deserving causes.

Agree. But people are donating. I find it baffling why you would.
