To take scooter to the zoo?

Odearr · 13/11/2024 09:39

Planning to take dc to London zoo at the weekend, 7 year old is not a good walker, and I think he would just throw a massive strop and cry and make the day miserable with all the walking around (especially the walk from the tube to the zoo is about half an hour I think)
are scooters even allowed at the zoo?
Is it annoying when kids are on scooters at the zoo?
I'll be by myself have him and then ds1 with me who has additional needs so trying to make the day go as smoothly as possible because every time we leave the house it seems to end up being a massive nightmare

They aren’t allowed in Edinburgh zoo. We scooted there one day from DSis house and had to leave it at reception.

movinghouse12 · 13/11/2024 09:41

Scooters not allowed at our local zoo either.

TickingAlongNicely · 13/11/2024 09:42

Seems they are allowed. But would be a menace if its crowded!

Presumably ds1 has a pushchair. Any chance you can borrow /use a double pushchair? Or slings for ds1 and stick your other DS in the pushchair when he gets fed up of walking?

tilypu · 13/11/2024 09:42

Is your Google broken?

"Rollerskates, rollerblades and skateboards are not allowed on Zoo premises. Children's scooters are permitted as long as they are supervised by an adult. No adult scooters are allowed on site."

MumChp · 13/11/2024 09:43

Children's scooters are permitted as long as they are supervised by an adult. If the zoo is full of people a scooter is useless.

YouveGotAFastCar · 13/11/2024 09:44

Rollerskates, rollerblades and skateboards are not allowed at London Zoo. "Young children's scooters may be allowed, under staff discretion."

I wouldn't risk it at the weekend, I suspect they'd allow it during the week in term-time when it's quiet, but you may also find that they don't consider 7 a young child.

Can you get the bus from the tube to the zoo?

I wouldn't take a scooter anyway, it sounds like it'll make the day very difficult for you to manage and I can't imagine the other zoo patrons will be happy to see a kid on a scooter.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 13/11/2024 09:44

We go all the time and take DSs scooter. Lots of kids do! No issues. Just make sure they don't run into anyone 😂

Lincoln24 · 13/11/2024 09:45

London zoo is pretty big, it doesn't get so crowded that a scooter is unsafe.

We used to regularly take ours back when we were members. Many people do. It was never a problem. Not sure why so many people think you're BU.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 13/11/2024 09:46

Just to add on... we often go at weekends, never any issue with overcrowding etc, especially at this time of year. Just use common sense in terms of walking/not scooting in covered walkway areas.

We also leave the scooter outside of any indoor exhibits we go into - we generally go at least twice a month (we're members) and have never had it moved/stolen, though appreciate it's never 100%!

DinosaurMunch · 13/11/2024 09:47

I'm sure it will be fine. Just make him walk.it through any crowds but there will be quieter stretches in between ideal for scooting

Edingril · 13/11/2024 09:48

Allowed or not it is not fair on everyone else

BabyPandaa · 13/11/2024 09:52

Yes they are allowed I took my kids scooters last month 10 and 7 ignore anyone saying not to they obviously haven’t been to London zoo it’s massive and will not be crowded this time of year and never really is even when I go in the summer due to the size, it’s a lot of walking the walk from the station alone is really long. Never been an issue.

Flossflower · 13/11/2024 09:57

We visit London Zoo quite often with our grandchildren, all younger than 8. They bring their scooters. However, we do monitor them very closely to make sure that they don’t scoot into people. Sometimes there are older children who scoot quickly and it can be a problem if it is crowded. There are a few places where there are ramps and scooting is not allowed, but it is very tempting. My advice would be to take the scooter but tell your child in advance about being careful.

Flossflower · 13/11/2024 10:01

For those saying London Zoo is big, which zoo are you thinking of? ZSL has 2 branches: I in Regents Park which is not so big and walkways can get busy and 1 in Whipsnade which is huge.

Edingril · 13/11/2024 09:48

Allowed or not it is not fair on everyone else

Why?

Because they'll be jealous that their child is moaning and the OP's isn't?

NuffSaidSam · 13/11/2024 10:02

There is a bus that goes towards the zoo OP, it is quite a walk from the tube.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/11/2024 10:04

You could get a bus from the tube as well. That might be exciting if you’re able to manage it with your other dc.

have a lovely day.

zaxxon · 13/11/2024 10:05

I used to take my DC's scooter to the zoo (Regent's park). It was never a problem. The walkways are pretty wide and the place is never as crowded as all that.

NuffSaidSam · 13/11/2024 10:01

Yes jealousy there could not possibly be any other reason like safety it has to be jealousy, that seems to be the go to on here

'my friend has haemorrhoids and complains'

'oh your'e just jealous'

Discombobble · 13/11/2024 10:08

Scooters are a menace, they should be confined to the garden.

They provide enjoyment and exercise for lots of children.

It can't be safety, we're talking about a child scooting in a place that allows children to scoot.

What unfairness were you talking about?

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 13/11/2024 10:11

It will be fine, provided your DS is sensible on it and does not race or scoot on ahead. If you know he can be trusted to use it sensibly it seems a good plan. Be prepared to have him get off and you carry it though in busier areas. So take a strap to make that easier for you.

London Zoo is huge. It permits children's scooters, I presume, because the size of the zoo means that younger children do struggle with covering the large area on foot.

Have a nice time.
