Part time / job share roles non existent?!

Do part time roles or job shares exist when applying for a new job externally??

I have been working part time for a while now but did so by putting in a request at my full time role, which was approved. It feels time for a change but I want to stay part time, there is pretty much nothing out there for corporate roles in London on a part time or job share basis!

I really thought part time was more common perhaps it’s not! AIBU to think so?

Any tips?!

It's harder in some industries than others. I job share but it started off with myself and my colleague being employed on full time fixed term contracts and we agreed between us that if permanent contract comes about, we will job share. We then approached our manager with the proposal. He was keen to keep us both and there was finite amount of funding so the proposal benefited everyone involved.
I still keep an eye on jobs in my area in case there is anything interesting for a couple of days a week and there aren't any. But if you look at retail, carer, reception roles - most of them are part time.
My partner couldn't find a part time teaching role but could easily find part time university lecturer role. Is there a bit of a wiggle room with your expertise for you to move into an adjacent industry?

Lots of part time in charity sector but pay is obviously worse

minipie · 13/11/2024 08:22

IME few roles will be advertised as part time but they may be open to it if you ask, especially if you’ve successfully been doing a similar role part time already. Depends on the role and the industry as pp said.

Stillplodding · 13/11/2024 08:32

I work part time in a retail role in the village because it’s a ten min walk from my house and opposite my youngest’s school.

I have an undergrad and postgrad degree.

However this job means I can start at 9 and finish at 3 and still do drop offs and pick ups.

It’s not exactly mentally fulfilling or challenging but for now it works for the family.

I couldn’t find anything that was part time straight away when I was looking.

Bbqnights · 13/11/2024 08:34

How part time do you want to be? I managed to negotiate 4 days at a new job. There's no-one covering the 5th day though.

Ineedanotherheropreferablyatwix · 13/11/2024 08:36

I've always gone for full time roles and asked on successful interview if I can work part time or compressed answer. To date I've not been declined.

NewToAllThisStuff · 13/11/2024 08:39

Agree that there are very few jobs (in my sector) advertised as p/t. I would look at f/t then if offered the role then ask about the possibility of p/t before accepting

DreadPirateRobots · 13/11/2024 08:40

Nothing will be advertised as job share outside the public sector, and it's bloody hard to make job shares work.

A lot depends on how part time you want to be. Most corporate jobs will be advertised FT but many, many of them will be open to 4 days or compressed hours. That's how I changed jobs when I was PT.

I totally agree!!!! I’m also looking for part time. I did my last role 0.8 FTE but it was just a full time role I had to do faster and I rarely was genuinely able to stick to part time hours and worked evenings a fair bit. I had the benefit of a weekday off which helped with some family commitments though but it wasn’t sustainable.

I want something stimulating and challenging but that i can genuinely do it within 3 days and have a family life too - one of my children has additional needs. I was fairly senior though, I’m not sure it works for those roles.

maybe there is a gap in the market for a job share match service!

I might switch careers - not sure what to though!

following this thread with interest. I’ve had the same convo with several parents.

I understand what you mean.

I work part-time (long term health issues) and I find that decently paid, senior jobs are in short supply.

I also worked with a jobshare for almost 5 years but again they don't seem very common.

I think it is areal issue because part-time working is so useful for people with health issues/disabilities, carers, lone parents and so on.

I think it is a sign that too many employers in this country are still rigidly wedded to full-time work and resist any kind of changes. You only have to look at how many complain about hybrid/home working.

Also, too many part-time jobs are just the employer taking the piss by saving on wages but expecting the employee to cram a full time input into part-time hours...

Maybe freelancing/consultancy/starting a small business might give more control and that is something I am looking into.

LostittoBostik · 13/11/2024 09:21

Lots of part time jobs only exist because someone full time asked to go part time due to a change in life circs and the company absorbed it. Often they are basically doing their entire old job in a fraction of the salary. Unless you're doing a service job (eg nursing/supermarket shift where you have to be present in a place while working) then I think PT hours are huge con.

whatwindow · 13/11/2024 15:53

It’s just so frustrating that everything is advertised full time and you have to go through the process hoping for the best - good tips though, thank you!
