To wonder what's happened to all the Colour Washing Powder?

I've used Aldi's Colour Washing Powder for years, and been very happy with the results.
Now it's been discontinued and I can't find a replacement.
All the powders I've looked at claim to be suitable for whites AND colours, but I can't see how they can keep your whites bright AND not fade your colours!
I know that powders seem to be being phased out, and I have bought some Colour Liquid from Tesco to try, but I can't use the pre-wash function on my machine with that.
Has anyone else had this problem, and have you found a solution please?

exact same issue here in Tesco!! I found some for colours in Sainsbury’s, their own brand

Stillamum3 · 13/11/2024 15:42

Thank you! Unfortuately our nearest Sainsbury's is 25 miles away, so unless we want an excursion that's out. I might have a look at Morrison's and see if they've got anything

I get huge boxes of Persil colour powder online - also Costco/booker have them if you have cards for these shops.

Suzuki76 · 13/11/2024 15:47

I would try a B&M/Savers/Poundstretcher/Home Bargains. Supermarkets aren't necessarily the best for value or choice.

Normallynumb · 13/11/2024 15:50

I now use Persil colour liquid because I could find any powder
I don't have anything white though and turn everything inside out before washing and I think that helps a bit

Stillamum3 · 13/11/2024 15:59

I'll have a look at Persil Colour, Stressed Eric. Have you found that it doesn't fade things?
I haven't looked in B&M, though I have in Home Bargains, but I was just dubious about the powders on offer not fading clothes.

Loads on amazon.

cherrytree12345 · 13/11/2024 16:02

Sainsburys do their own colour liquid too. Its in a carton rather than a plastic bottle
Dylon has started doing detergent for colours and a separate one for dark clothes

perenniallymessy · 13/11/2024 16:03

Generally it is suggested to use powder for whites (as that has bleaching agents and optical brighteners, plus dissolves better at the slightly longer times and temps used for whites) and liquid for colours as it doesn't have the bleach and works better at lower temps/shorter times.

I wonder if that is why colour powders have been discontinued?

crazycatladie · 13/11/2024 16:03

I've been using Amazon's own brand colour washing powder, I've found it ok

PiggyPigalle · 13/11/2024 16:09

Could I have a little OT tag on your post please OP.
As powder is becoming harder to find and I've never used tabs, which tab to buy that doesn't contain fabric softener. They all say 3 in 1.

WhippetsRule · 13/11/2024 16:11

Waitrose do a colours powder. I'd never use pods/powders, horrible slimy stuff and bad for washing machines.

SwankyPants · 13/11/2024 16:12

I thought it was my area lol all I could find was capsules

GaladrielHiggins · 13/11/2024 16:16

The only place I could find Persil Colour powder was Ocado, so I buy it in bulk from there when it’s on offer

TheFlis · 13/11/2024 16:21

Tesco do a colour powder, I have a box downstairs, but it often seems to be out of stock which is annoying.

RememberRememberTheMonthofNovember · 13/11/2024 16:25

On Mumsnet some time ago a poster, who said she had worked in a relevant field, said powder was better for cleaning purposes so I’ve always tried to use powder since then.

I can’t remember her writing that it was only best for whites, although I might not have taken that in.

I agree that colour powder is increasingly difficult to buy.

Oh. I shop in W for food but go cheap for cleaning products. Not cheap if it breaks the washer though.

Stillamum3 · 13/11/2024 16:31

Yes, I've just had a look at Amazon crazycat and I've added their own brand Colour powder to my watchlist, as well as a couple of others. They all work out more expensive than Aldi's own used to be, and I've always used own brands where possible, as I hate paying for the name and the advertising! Perhaps I'm just tight!
I'll have a look at prices for persil colour in B&M when we go shopping tomorrow and see if I can find a good price.
Unfortunately Ocado don't deliver here Galadriel we're a bit rural, but thanks for the info.

I think the reason it's being discontinued is that the companies make more profit on the pods and liquids!

Comefromaway · 13/11/2024 16:35

I find that powder is best for whites and liquid for colours/delicates.

buffyspikefaithangel · 13/11/2024 16:49

Persil colour protect

I use the liquids from Aldi or Tesco as powders clogged up my machine. But I put them in the drum in the lid of a container. The Tesco bio one is now flowery not plain but it’s ok so far. No idea why they change things that work.
