Supermarket had no retirement cards in - removed for Xmas

A colleague at previous workplace is retiring tomorrow. Went to a relatively large Tesco and their cards section - half taken up by Xmas cards. The card merchandiser was in, sorting out the stock. Asked her where are the retirement cards. Was told by head office (unsure if that's Tesco or her employer) to remove retirement cards. Yet there were about 6 each of new job, new house, good luck.

I knew of many people retiring this time of year and up to Christmas. Really crazy idea of removing retirement cards. To be replaced by Xmas cards which sone are £5. People are being savvy and not spending that amount on a single card for Xmas.

Go elsewhere then. Sainsbury’s have some gorgeous cards as well as M&S. It’s not a big deal.

What is your question exactly?

GretaGip · 12/11/2024 15:34

It's about time we didn't fuck the planet each time there's a Hallmark moment.

ShamblesRock · 12/11/2024 15:35

You struggle to get any card this time of year. An independent is often better as they can check in the bottom drawers if there is anything not on display.

Strange to have none at all though.

Supermarkets can be great, but on their terms. Smaller retailers will give you a better variety a lot of the time, whether it's a different choice of flavoured crisps, different pasta shapes, or a better choice of books and cards. Got to support them, though, even if they're a little more expensive. You'll miss them when they're gone.

It's always been the same supermarkets will put out what sells. I've always bought my birthday cards etc well in advance for Christmas birthdays. Even worse is when they reduce the gluten free section to fit in Christmas foods.when actually what my gf afrid child needs is the same foods we buy all year round.

Really crazy idea of removing retirement cards.

I imagine they know exactly what they sell the most of.

I forgot to add I have a money off coupon at Tesco so thought buying a card would help towards the total spend.

I also remember 2 years ago, I had trouble buying sympathy cards this time of year. I went to about 5 shops - supermarkets and card shops and reduced the section to cards with verses that you want to to just vomit. I knew that the widows and bereaved people don't like those cards as they said to me. Lost 3 people in the space of 3 weeks.

People die all year round.

Go to Card Factory.
You can probably get a card for 79p.

Really crazy idea seems a bit of a stretch.

Vote with your feet and shop at a card shop if you’re that bothered? I shop at a card shop all year round as I know the supermarkets often don’t have the cards I want. Yes, even the big ones!

Years ago I saw a letter in a paper where someone claimed to have gone into W H Smith's to buy a Bible as an Easter present for a child. She couldn't find any and asked an assistant. 'We took them off the shelves to make way for seasonal stock', she said. Grin

I have two December birthdays in the family. We no longer bother much with Christmas cards, not least because of the enormous cost of cards + postage, but we do give birthday cards to very close family. They have to be bought well in advance if I want any decent choice.

Needmorelego · 12/11/2024 15:59

Or buy from Moonpig or somewhere.

Theonlywayisuptoyou · 12/11/2024 16:03

Try having a family birthday to buy a card for anytime from now till clearance of Christmas stock after the new year. Doing rough maths 1 in 12 people will have birthdays in December so lots of need but you have to shop ahead every year if you want a choice of birthday cards.
