Would you have sent your child to nursery today ?

My little one, 2 and a half, had a fever in the night and quite a bit of coughing. I gave him calpol at midnight. He was upset on and off during the night.

His fever went down and by this morning, he's himself. I haven't had to top up calpol yet or anything. He's just got a cough.

I didn't send him to nursery today. I tend not to when he's been unwell in the night.

Would you have sent him when he seemed ok in the morning ?

I would have.

Lostworlds · 12/11/2024 11:11

If he’s not slept well, had a fever during the night and you’re at home then no I wouldn’t have sent him.

Floralnomad · 12/11/2024 11:11

I probably would have taken him in but told them he had a bad night and to call if they felt he wasn’t coping .

YellowHatt · 12/11/2024 11:11

Mine enjoys nursery so if they were back to feeling themselves and no calpol needed then I would have.

Overthebow · 12/11/2024 11:12

Yes I would have sent my DC in, but we have been hammered with sickness from school and nursery recently so have used up a lot of goodwill with both our work. We are now sending to school and nursery as long as they are ok in themselves so would send in this situation.

No I wouldn't have.

SarahLHs · 12/11/2024 11:12

If I had to work then yes I'd send them. If I was off then I wouldn't.

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/11/2024 11:13

No because he had a fever in last 24 hours, so could potentially be infectious with something even if it hasn’t reared it’s ugly head yet and also because he had a bad night’s sleep so is going to be tired and grumpy. It would be back to nursery tomorrow though if all was fine today and he slept well tonight!

DoctorAngelface · 12/11/2024 11:14

It would depend on how urgently I needed to be at work. It doesn't sound like he has one foot in the grave. But on the other hand, he does sound unwell.

If I could get away with skipping work, I'd ditch nursery.

Sweetaschocolate · 12/11/2024 11:16

I find fevers always lower in the moring so potentially it could start going up again as the day goes on.

You know your child so do what you feel comfortable doing.

redgingerbread · 12/11/2024 11:19

Yeah, I’m afraid I definitely sent mine to nursery when he was below par but not actively ill - not much choice really as we had to work and this was pre covid so WFH wasn’t a thing.

KnittyNell · 12/11/2024 11:24

No!
I am a childminder and don’t accept children until 48 hours after a fever have passed, they could be harbouring all kinds of diseases.

RedLeicesterRedLeicester · 12/11/2024 11:33

Depends if I had work or not.

Scirocco · 12/11/2024 11:35

Absolutely not.

Butterbean21 · 12/11/2024 11:41

I wouldn't send if we had a fever within last 24 hours. I do work shifts though so not in every day and DH can work from home so we would make it work.

ttcat37 · 12/11/2024 11:44

No, you did the right thing. I’m pregnant and my baby recently picked up a nasty bug at nursery from another baby whose parent sent in their poorly child. He’s been horrendously ill and I caught it too, we’ve been ill for almost 3 weeks. It’s very selfish to send a poorly child to nursery. It affects a lot of people- more than just one person having to stay at home and look after their child.

VivianLea · 12/11/2024 11:53

It depends. If I had an important day at work, yes. If it was something I could rearrange or I was at home, DC would stay home with me

pumpkinpillow · 12/11/2024 11:53

You should check your nursery sickness policy. Most will want the child to be free of fever for 24 or 48 hrs before sending them.

RedOnyx · 12/11/2024 12:00

Our nursery has a policy of 24 hours fever free so if I sent her in I would have to lie to them. But if I gave Calpol at midnight I know from experience that the fever would likely come back around 10 a.m. so I would assume she was still poorly and it was just the medicine making her appear fine.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 12/11/2024 12:01

On a working day, absolutely yes.

Mimiconvos · 12/11/2024 12:01

We have a 48hr rule in school and nursery with high temps or vomiting etc so no I’d keep at home too.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 12/11/2024 12:06

If he was fine I would send him in but tell them he had an unsettled night

Milkshakebanana · 12/11/2024 12:09

You definitely did the right thing keeping him off. I wouldn’t have send my DC to nursery if they had been upset in the night and had a fever. I’d give it at least 24 hours.

KnittyNell · 12/11/2024 14:41

Thewholeplaceglitters · 12/11/2024 12:01

On a working day, absolutely yes.

So you don’t care if your child passed on whatever disease they may be harbouring?
How lovely of you.

RecycleMePlease · 12/11/2024 14:48

No, I wouldn't have - although I'd be rolling my eyes for the rest of the day as he bounced off the walls while I tried to work.

He'd be knackered. I wouldn't want to send them in that tired.
