To think teaching basic manners is important

NC as outing...
Noticed recently that a few families in our large group of friends don't teach basic manners to their children. Things like please and thank you, hand over mouth when coughing, not speaking when eating etc. Not talking about really little ones - 5 +. Getting push back from my own three when I remind them... "but so&so doesn't do it". Got sprayed in the face with food today by a 7 year old who was talking with a mouth full (whilst his mother said nothing). Are manners a thing of the past?

No I don't believe manners are a thing of the past. However, for some people they're not important.

I hope you have the disgusting 7 year old the telling off his mother couldn't be bothered to give!
Is there anything that isn't too much effort for many parents?

It gets commented on so so much that our son is so polite. Teachers are amazed how polite he is and we even get strangers commenting

however- I don’t believe he is any more polite then I was as a child or most people my age but I think it’s because politeness is not longer seen as a priority. I am just hoping it stand him in good stead for the future as the way things are going he is going to be one of the few of his age group who know how to say please and thank you

I don't think manners alone are important. But hygiene is. So no coughing or sneezing without covering your face. I also think empathy is important, so showing gratitude to people who help you offerring help to anyone who looks like they need it..
But there are manners that are completely ridiculous such as not putting your elbows on a table, not eating whilst walking, having to give eye contact
I teach my kids anything that makes sense to me and is based on being kind and considerate. But I don't teach them things I never understood the purpose of just for the sake of it

Everyone I know teaches basic manners and thinks it is important. It's really not a thing of the past for most parents.
