Would IBU to ask for £100 to the person who I rehome my dogs to? 2 of them. They're a pedigree breed, spayed and neutered, not KC reg
opinions welcome. Thanks

If I knew where these dogs were I'd come and give you £100 and REHOME them myself.
You're not rehoming them you want rid and want money for them. If you don't know what happens to dogs that are sold like this or talk about them like they're something to gain a few quid from then you shouldn't have dogs.

JasperBoo · 11/11/2024 18:22

It's worth finding a rescue that's specifically for your breed and phoning them to see how much their adoption fee is and match this.

You don't want someone buying them to resell at a profit.

Sinatras · 11/11/2024 19:38

I’ve registered with a few reputable charities but they always say there’s a long wait etc. I don’t want them to go into kennels as that would stress them out, and most places will match you to a new home and arrange for you to meet them independently. But even to do that, there is a 10 week wait

If you are genuinely rehoming your own dogs, £100 is not enough. You need to price them at a reasonable rate but not too low to attract people who will abuse them. Going through a rescue is so much better. If you can, you can foster your dogs till they get a new home.

They need to be around £300-£500

I don’t need the money for money for them. But I’d like to know that whoever has them, has the spare money for insurance etc. that’s the only reason I’d ask for any money for them

So what good will charging £100 do?

What's the hurry to get rid of them anyway?

Is there family or someone who will have them for 10 weeks while you get matched?

bluebalou · 11/11/2024 19:42

Can I ask why you are having to re home them ? What is the situation ?

DarkForces · 11/11/2024 19:43

Do you want your dogs used as bait for training attack dogs? If not wait for a rescue. Poor dogs

cryinglaughing · 11/11/2024 19:49

What breed are they?
Have you tried a breed rescue?

MissUltraViolet · 11/11/2024 19:56

£100 is nothing and someone being able to pay it does not show you a damn thing about the life they might end up having.

Your dogs could end up being used as bait or for fighting, or get stuck with a horrible twat that treats them like shit then also abandons them when they are bored.

You need to go through a rescue even if there is a wait, it is the right and decent thing to do for them. What breed are they? have you tried any breed specific charities or groups?

Whaleandsnail6 · 11/11/2024 19:56

Why are you getting rid of them?

You need to work with a rescue, and rehome them through proper channels, even if there is a wait. You have a responsibility to the dogs to re-home them properly and not just to someone who responds to whatever advert or plea for rehoming you put out.

Just because someone can come up with £100 doesnt mean they can afford to have a dog or be trusted to look after it properly.

Attelina · 11/11/2024 19:56

Contact Debbie and see if she can give you any help or support in rehoming them.

Goodness me, please do the right thing by them & hand them to a rescue where potential owners are thoroughly checked & vetted. You owe it to them to fully ensure you know their fate. There are dog baiters & all sorts out there. This is so sad.

Iheartmysmart · 11/11/2024 20:03

If you genuinely can’t keep them and can’t wait for 10 weeks until you can rehome them with a reputable rescue then the kindest thing to do would be to put to sleep. There are far worse things that can happen to unwanted dogs than a peaceful death at the vets.

JasperBoo · 11/11/2024 23:58

Hi,
You can give the money as a donation to an animal charity.

It's not about you getting the money, it's about:

A) Not giving them away for little enough money that those looking for dog fighting bait will take them.

B) Not creating a situation where someone will just see an opportunity to make a profit, get the dogs from you then sell them straight on for more.

And it's good that you've contacted reputable animal charities, but if you are rehoming a dog that looks like a pure breed then you need to go to a rescue that specialises in that breed and see how much their adoption fees are, then you ask for the same amount.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/11/2024 04:21

Keep contacting rescues - say that you can keep the dogs at home whilst a home is found, you're happy for prospective adopters to visit or to bring them to the shelter for a visit, you just need them to help with advertising and home checking and provide back up should the homing fail.

Even rescues who are near capacity can often manage that (though they do have to ensure they have the space to take back dogs if the rehome fails for some reason).

£100 will not stop those who wish to buy dogs for awful purposes, and a figure that would stop such people will also stop the genuine people too, it is not a solution to your problem.

Have you contacted the breeders of your dogs, good breeders should have a 'take back' policy (a reason among many to buy from a decent breeder of course).

You realise that’s not free don’t you? If the dogs are healthy the vet may well refuse… is everything in your life so easily disposable? Disgust…. 🤢

You are a truly awful person.

Iheartmysmart · 12/11/2024 06:47

@RickyGervaislovesdogs @Mercurial123 Thats your opinion and you’re entitled to it. And no, not everything in my life is disposable. I had to have my old spaniel put to sleep last year when we could no longer manage his arthritis pain. We tried everything possible and it absolutely broke my heart losing him but it was the best thing for him. He went peacefully to sleep in my arms and I miss him every day.

But he realistic here, shelters are packed, we are in a huge cost of living crisis and it’s coming up to Christmas which is a dreadful time to rehome dogs. I can’t even begin to imagine how many more pets will be dumped over the festive season.

If you believe that being sold on Gumtree for £100 is in these dogs best interests then fine. I just have a different view.

I actually agree with this. There are worse things in life for a dog than being PTS

Shade17 · 12/11/2024 10:59

Find a breed club and ask if they can help. My (small) breed club has £20k in an account just for rescue.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/11/2024 14:18

For those leaping to burn the OP at the stake here...

This is someone who has come to ask for help in rehoming their dog.

The minute someone doesn't want their dog, for whatever reason at all - that dog is better off rehomed. No dog should live where they are not wanted.

So the reasons are in fact irrelevant.

What are you achieving by attempting to make the OP feel awful, because it isn't going to make them keep their dog.

It is likely to make them not ask for help any further, and as they have dogs they need to rehome, who do you think suffers as a result of that?

I am also firmly in the 'there are worse things to happen to a dog than euthanasia'. Much much worse things.

It's nice and easy to say 'oh you're a horrific person for even thinking it' but have you been the person living with dogs you cannot keep for some reason?

Have you had to leave your dogs to suffer separation anxiety because you have to work, or struggle with dogs with behavioural problems. Or have a timer running on how long you can keep them because you're about to be homeless... or have to decide if you buy dog food or food for the kids.

I know lots will pipe up and say they'd live in their car for their dogs or they'd go homeless to keep their dogs, but the truth is most people not only wouldn't, but couldn't.

Of course, there may be other options. There are fostering schemes, there are rescues and people who foster dogs in domestic abuse situations. You could potentially kennel dogs whilst you find a suitable home for you all...

But if people are shamed for asking for help... they won't find these options!

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 13/11/2024 04:08

@Iheartmysmart The vet can refuse, what do you suggest then? axe? It’s not a solution.
Please don’t get any more pets, if that’s your considered ‘go to’ solution.
Or putting your dog on gumtree.

Cost of living my arse in the vast majority of cases! It doesn’t seem to extend to the purchase of fireworks does it! Always money to piss away on those.

If this post is real. If you are a dog breeder I hope you see it and stop bloody breeding. I don’t think it’s shaming the OP, do you honestly think they haven’t heard of rehoming or rescues?! 🙄 or a kennels? Come on. It’s a wake up call, that gumtree and £50 a dog is peanuts.
