Neighbours have numbered their house…

Not with the post office formally, just decided it’s awkward to have a name instead of a number and started using it.

No houses here have numbers and never have. All named from before the area was built up.

It’s really really annoying as they have named themselves ‘one’ but they are set well back from the road and have a high gate/ alley to enter. Mine is the first obvious house front at the end of the road. So I get their post a lot.

It also makes delivery drivers get angry- no one else has numbers, like we should, or knock constantly to ask which end of the road number one is (most houses are set back so it’s me who gets the brunt).

Ive tried talking about it, but they are determined houses need numbers and it’s easier. I’ve tried stopping the postman, but it’s constant agency staff changing over.

So… I started simply marking anything through my door with the made up address and not our names ‘not at this address’ and popping it back in the post box. Aibu? They have got really cross!

They are the kind of people who order constant parcels and get post still

YANBU

minipie · 11/11/2024 09:13

They need to put a large number 1 or even a sign saying Number One on their gatepost.

They need to put a large number 1 or even a sign saying Number One on their gatepost.

They are neither that reasonable nor do they problem solve. Unmarked gate that looks like an alley. Never got the ‘house name’ post and they think it’s because it was named not numbered… nope. It’s unmarked at the street and only on the side door

I’d put up a notice outside my letterbox saying this is not house No. 1, house No. 1 is up the road at blah blah. And yes, returning any post as well!

Thelnebriati · 11/11/2024 09:16

Put number 2 on your door. They still won't get their post but you won't either so its a win-win.

Gonegirl7 · 11/11/2024 09:16

I would continue putting it back in the post box with return to sender. It’s a good lesson

WhichSock · 11/11/2024 09:17

Not being unreasonable.

I’d mark everything “not at this address” and back in the post box.

Likewise, I’d turn all parcels away.

How thick do you have to be to number your house “1” when it’s not the first house in the street?

LittleMonks11 · 11/11/2024 09:18

Just number your house 0

Turbo4 · 11/11/2024 09:19

I would inform the post office as from experience they are usually strict about it and will only deliver post to what’s registered on their system so if it’s house names any numbers should be returned to the sorting office.
I wouldn’t discuss it with them anymore as they are unwilling to sort the situation they have created. Any letters you get pop back in the post box and any delivery drivers say sorry can’t help as it’s only names here, on repeat until they get the message.

Vallan · 11/11/2024 09:19

If your house has a name, do you not have the name on a sign?

So posties can see yours is 'House Name' and not #1?

CrazyCatLady008 · 11/11/2024 09:20

Just give your house a random number like 1088 it'll stop their post.

I have a note in the corner of the glass. I think many delivery drivers are under horrible time pressures and stressed and dump it in the house that easiest to access a lot of the time. I get wrong names too less frequently.
Also, there’s often a language barrier to add to the time pressures. It’s not the best situation and it happened. They’ve just hugely increased it from occasional to many times a week/ day.

Huge wooden sign visible from the road and smaller on the door. My house is well labelled! And a note to please check the house/ note this isn’t number one too

Keep doing what you're doing, and returning the post.

They'll work it out eventually!

That’s what I’ve done, they are angry as apparently a phone contract was cancelled after repeated ‘not at this address returns’. Amazon also returned parcels they ‘needed’.

Surely it would be more sensible for all houses to be numbered. I hate delivering to areas where I have to read every house name, often written in cursive that you have to be half way up the drive to make out.

Well it sounds as though you've done as much as you can OP, so I too would write on the envelope and return it to the system - when convenient to me of course. Once they miss a lot of their mail they'll hopefully see the error of their ways.

unbelieveable22 · 11/11/2024 09:23

Keep returning everything. If they didn't have the courtesy to discuss it then it's on them. Point out to them your house is first in the road and you may consider numbering yours one.

BrioNotBiro · 11/11/2024 09:24

You can call your house what you want, but the Royal Mail and the local council determine postcodes and property numbers, occupants can't just do it arbitrarily.
Contact the council and see what they say.

CrazyCatLady008 · 11/11/2024 09:24

I'd tell them you're not their private PO Box, it's not your problem and if they want to be angry to be angry with themselves as they've caused this whole problem by acting stupid.

I wouldn't even tell them their post/parcels is still coming to your address just say they've stopped sending them to yours and then send it all back.

TokyoSushi · 11/11/2024 09:25

Well that's massively annoying, I'd be tempted to put a different number on my house to make it really obvious it's not number 1, and continue to refuse all deliveries.

FranticHare · 11/11/2024 09:25

Then they should 'get mad' at the Royal Mail for not delivering their mail to the correct address. Not you.

I expect the Royal Mails response will be same as yours, and they need to signpost their house. Perhaps your neighbours will listen to them!

I didn’t build the village so I can’t change that factor

This is proof you're doing te right thing!

All the other solutions put the onus onto you to solve it. What you're doing makes it a probelm for them to solve and until they do it will continue to cause them issues.

I agree completely, @CrazyCatLady008.

This sounds intensely frustrating, @UprootedSunflower.
