Relative constantly taking photos/videos of baby

One of our relatives on DHs side constantly takes photos/videos of our baby. Baby is almost 5 months old. Today the relative visited and spent most of the time with their phone camera on baby either clicking away or filming her doing things. Obviously my baby is too young to have any idea what’s going on but she will as she gets older and I assume the behaviour will continue.

AIBU to think it’s a bit weird? I can understand one or two photos but not constantly.

I miss the days of cameras with film roll that were used sparingly!

Wouldn't say its dramatic enough behaviour to require a MN post?

Tell them to stop?

My mam used to do this. Videos and pictures constantly when they were babies. They’re toddler and primary school ages, and it’s far less frequent. It just naturally reduced. Nobody said anything or got upset, they started moving / interacting more, and she followed suit.

Fair enough! Will just let them get on with it then. Just not something I’m used to in my family and sometimes think it would be better if they actually interacted with baby rather than just take photos but each to their own.

thank you

Apologies, didn’t realise questions all had to be relating to something dramatic to be worthy of mumsnet. You’re more than welcome to skip it if you don’t think it’s interesting enough for you.

Not sure I have any real justification to do so.. just not something I’m used to with my family/friends. I’m also quite camera shy myself so probably notice a bit more but baby won’t have a clue what’s going on.

i think you have a Right to say something, it’s a bit out of order! I had to have a conversation with my wife about her sister, who has open social media and I said I don’t any pictures of my daughter on her socials, mainly because she would only post pics for “likes”

If it’s on your husband side I’d the family them he should say something

CurlyCabbage · 10/11/2024 23:22

Ask your husband to discuss with his family member. To be honest, people probably thought I was batshit but Ive always had a strong stance against people taking pics of our kids.

I also don't like people sending me pics of their kids either. I have strong feelings about consent and believe in the future we should have laws about kids on social media before they can consent etc.

I think a couple of pictures and videos is ok during a visit, with the parents permission of course. But to be constantly doing it throughout the entire visit is just annoying and invasive.

I can’t imagine many adults wanting to be constantly filmed by a relative.

If it makes you uncomfortable, you must absolutely say something, in an assertive but diplomatic way.
