AIBU to raise with management request to work from home again

Context is very important so please read-

My role is office based. I’ve always been happy with this to an extent, it’s what I signed up for, but we are one of two offices and our other office works hybrid (same job role). When I joined and found this out I was a bit miffed but our manager was always flexible if we did need to WFH for the odd day here and there and also if we had Covid etc we could WFH.

This flexibility was the case until a colleague took the mick slightly by requesting it more often than they liked, and this caused them to ban WFH for all of our team regardless of the circumstance as they didn’t want it to seem they were declining one person and not everyone so just blanket banned all.

Anyway, recently I brought it up again (whether they’d allow us to move to hybrid), and their response was a half arsed ‘not until all members of the team are fully knowledgable’. There’s only one team member who lacks knowledge (as they’re new) and I agree they would not be able to WFH effectively so thought it would just be a waiting game for them to learn more and then we could. HOWEVER, last week I was told that management have approved her to wfh for the next couple of weeks ‘otherwise she wouldn’t be able to work’. I was essentially told she was the pure reason we could not move to hybrid and now they’ve approved her to WFH!?

AIBU to bring it up AGAIN!?!

I think I’m extra bitter because I have never abused wfh, others have. Not me. In 3 years I’ve done maybe 4 days WFH. It’s simply the point of it. We were being treated unequally to our other office & now a member of our teams been approved when they declined a request I made 3 months ago. I ended up having to take the week off so sounds like similar circumstances to my colleague and they’ve approved hers and not mine 🤯

Sounds like incompetent management. It would be legitimate to raise it again.

FFS why can't managers manage people and not blanket rules - lazy management!
Do you have any extenuating circumstances?

Newmum2610 · 10/11/2024 16:54

Management were saying no and trying to avoid conflict with you.
You can raise it again but I suspect the answer will still be no

They obviously want people back in the office. Perhaps it’s time to look for another job.

Would it be worth suggesting a rule of you all being allowed up to 10? 12? 15? 20? other number? of days when you can wfh per year ?
That way

  • you are all been treated the same
  • the employer still has most people in the office, most of the time
  • no-one has to share personal circumstances with anyone if they want to wfh on a particular day
