To Wake Our Sleeping One Year Old

Hi everyone,

Our son has been really out of sorts over the past couple of days (waiting for GP appointment, suspect may be hand, foot and mouth, but can’t see any blisters in his mouth).

Night before last bed time routine took 3.5 hours, so he didn’t go to sleep until about 11pm. He then didn’t wake up until 9.30am (we decided to let him sleep as he had had a bad night the previous night too).

Last night he went to bed at 7.45pm but woke up an hour later and was distraught whenever we tried to quiet / cuddle him until he finally dropped off at 1am.

I am tempted to wake him to try and get him back towards his normal routine (he normally wakes around 7-7.30am, it’s 8.50am now) but also mindful he’s had less than 8 hours’ sleep.

Would be really grateful for any thoughts

YABU - he’s tired and poorly, let me sleep

YANBU - letting him sleep even later will only make things worse at bedtime

I'd keep checking on him, but probably leave him to sleep tbh, and adjust naps accordingly if I need to - he's ill and tired, how would you feel if it was you being woken up?

I don’t really think there’s any benefit in trying to force a sick child to sleep on routine.

Pandasnacks · 10/11/2024 08:58

I'd let him sleep, it doesn't sound like he's finishing the illness off (based on still waiting to see the GP), and sleep is important when you're ill so I'd leave him to it and just keep checking on him.

Sleep is the body's time to heal and recover....as the saying goes it's the best medicine. Just keep checking on him.

People sleep to recover when their poorly. Unless you want a really ratty and miserable baby whose going to take even longer to recover let him sleep.

Def let him sleep! He won’t get better when sleep deprived, the body needs rest to recover and you get more poorly when you’re tired. Mine usually did an extra long sleep when they were done with the illness too having slept poorly during.
