Teething or something more?

At the moment I'm putting everything down to teething. First tooth broke through gum three or four days ago.
DD (8 months) has had a temperature, pink cheeks, some spots on her cheeks, diarrhoea (yellow/green colour), a couple of projectile vomit episodes. Struggling to fall asleep when tired without a dose of Calpol.

Yesterday she started coughing which I'm guessing is just standard cough/cold sniffles.

She has been grizzly at times but also very happy, smiling, playing. If she starts crying it easy to distract her with bubbles or a song so I'm thinking it can't be that bad.

Is this just run of the mill teething? Ftm so have nothing to compare it to.

Also any tips would be super appreciated. At the moment I'm giving her Calpol twice a day. Teething powder did nothing. 😊

When they are teething they produce more saliva, which can go down towards their lungs, and can cause a cough and even a chest infection.
If she’s eating/drinking, sleeping and playing I’d say she’s ok, but keep an eye on the cough.

what was her temperature? I’ve never known vomitting with teething or anything other than 0.5c temp increase. She sounds ill to me.

btw nurofen is much better than calpol for teething

@Lifeglowup I've always worried about her vomiting. She had to go to a&E in an ambulance once because of severe vomiting. doctors put it down to a tummy bug but I'm not convinced as projectile vomiting is a fairly common occurrence. It's just been particularly bad this week. The cough also sounds a bit chesty. She does seem ok in herself, still wants to play but at the same time is obviously not on top form. I would say her poo looks foamy almost. It's given her a bit of nappy rash (first time she's very had it).

Yes, teething gives them vile nappies and nappy rash. I believe it’s because the teething makes the poo very acidic.

I don't have a thermometer, so don't know exactly. I would say low grade temperature. Hot but not through the roof. Hair was damp last night before I gave her Calpol. Calpol is keeping it down.

@Lifeglowup Thanks, that is reassuring. I was a bit worried. Its probably the saliva that's made the vomiting worse too. Poor little thing. I feel so bad for her. Yet she is troopering on. I would want to be curled up in bed!

Parents of young children with no thermometer in the house absolutely baffle me, but maybe that's my anxiety speaking. Maybe get one so you know what you're dealing with? It does sound like more than teething to me, I'd be taking her to the GP tbh, especially with a chesty cough.

Lifeglowup · 10/11/2024 07:47

Please get a thermoter. They’re very useful. Mine saved my life my first was a new born. One of my kids had a very high temp 41c and behaved normally and without the thermometer we may have not gone to A and E then - she was admitted for 3 days.

Projectile vomiting travels over a meter before hitting the wall. All babies and young children vomit in a way it travs away from them so they don’t choke. If it’s trus projectile vomiting you should seek medical advice.

Coolbreezee · 10/11/2024 07:52

@Lifeglowup thermometer is on my list of things to get, I may pop to boots today in fact.

It is true projectile vomiting. As I said she was taken to A&E in an ambulance because of it. However, so far doctor's advice has been 'probably just a tummy bug'. I'm not convinced because it happens fairly frequently. Two or three episodes every couple of weeks.

I wouldn’t be happy with this explaination. Get the thermometer so you know if the vomiting occurs when she has a raised temperature.

When she isn’t uwell does she vomit, is her poo normal, any skin rashes, wheezing and how is her weight gain?

Coolbreezee · 10/11/2024 08:47

@Lifeglowup thanks. I've ordered a thermometer off Amazon. She vomits when she is well, however, there has been more vomiting since teething started. Once was bile, other times were liquid/curdled milk (not food despite weaning).

Weight gain is fine. She is strong and ahead with milestones, already standing by herself. A very happy baby so no concerns there.

I don't like this cough, she sounds a bit whistly/ wheezy.

Normally poop is okay. It's just the last week it been worrying.

I feel like I'm wasting the GP s time because every time I have been re. Sickness they say babies get sick, wait and see, she will probably grow out of it. Or, she may just have a tummy bug. However they aren't there when she is
Projectile vomiting (it is scary and not normal!)

Sorry about punctuation, typing on phone.

How often is she vomitting? Try keeping a food and vomit diary when she is well. She sounds like my oldest who had cmpa.

Just a quick update. Definitely more than teething. Was signposted to A&E this afternoon. Looks like she has a pretty nasty viral infection. Keeping a close eye on her. She hasn't managed to keep anything down all day. Nappies have been horrific. very pleased it's not something more serious
