Setting off fireworks in crowd at a bonfire

So I went last night to a bonfire with my 1 year old and husband last night, son loved the firework display but we left early as someone lit a firework near us in the crowd and ran off, it didn’t hit anyone but went off right near some toddlers and freaked us out in case they lit any more and someone got hurt.

AIBU to be so disappointed people do this stuff? Not many other people left because of it even though I’m certain we did the right thing as we would have been worrying. I know teenagers out with their friends do stupid shit but I was surprised no one else seemed really freaked out by it?

We had a really nice time, just scared the shit out of me as it was so close to us and no security came or anything to try and find who did it. It would have been a lot of people to check bags and I’m sure they could have brought them in in their pockets, was just very scary (maybe I had the fear of fireworks blowing my face off drummed into me too much as a kid?).

Is this something that just happens at firework displays? We’ve been to this one several years in a row and it’s always been the most mellow one in the local area and mostly full of families.

I was going to email the place that hosted it but I’m not even sure on rules re. checking bags at big events and Google isn’t helping. Just shook us up a bit as was so close to us and there were toddlers stood a few feet from where it went off 😳😳

Fireworks can and do kill people. Your experience illustrates exactly why sales should be restricted (and maybe banned) among the general public.
We (rightly) berate the US for its gun laws but allow people to buy fireworks and treat them like toys.

My mum has a scar from exactly that, a boy playing with fireworks in the street. It whooshed at her and got her on the leg. She needed burns treatment and over 70 years later still has a scar.

Bet the stupid wee lad doesn't even remember doing it and she's carried the scar since she was 10 so never forgot.

Boys. Sigh. More money than sense.

I want the sale of them banned, licensed displays only.

Here let people have explosives what could possibly go wrong!!

So glad it’s not just me overreacting, felt like we were the weird ones for leaving as no one else really reacted! I agree totally, such dangerous things that you can buy in some supermarkets, it’s bizarre. I adore fireworks at displays but this was just scary. It’s usually very civilised (hosted at a posh local private school and geared towards families) so wasn’t expecting scumbaggery like it!
