To not change baby’s nappy right now

9 week old Baby cried and screamed for hours last night before bed nothing was calming or working I had tried everything even resorted to a walk in the pram but the screaming continued. and then was up in the night loads although partner helped out too I’m absolutely exhausted and suffering from period pain first period since baby. Baby has been up all morning too refusing nap and crying. Finally baby has fallen asleep but is definitely due a nappy change. I’ve heard him poop or could be a fart. I really don’t want to wake him but feel so bad not changing him. I’ve cried this morning from exhaustion. AIBU to leave him for a bit longer so I can eat some breakfast and sit next to him with my hot water bottle. He was so over tired this morning I should have changed him before he fell asleep but i was desperately trying to calm him down instead. I a ftm and last few days have been so hard with him don’t think the pain im going through is helping either. I’m feeling awful for not changing him.

Noooo! Don't wake him, and don't feel bad!

Just change him when he wakes, and have yourself a cuppa in peace Smile

And take care, the early days are hard!

If you don't, you need to air his bottom well afterwards, do what you need to do, breakfast and shower and then change him 10 minutes won't make a huge difference but I wouldn't leave it longer than that.

Baby will be fine for 10-15 minutes while you eat some breakfast. If they are still asleep there's a good chance it was a fart anyway!

Personally I'm of the opinion you never wake a sleeping baby unless you've a good reason.

If baby has bad nappy rash or has leaked through then I'd probably change them but if all looks OK then I'd let them sleep and change as soon as they wake up.

If you were asleep right now you wouldn't be changing baby anyway. So take the rest.

I would because nappy rash is horrible but 10 minutes will be fine.

Don’t leave it long - the one time I did DS had nappy rash and I felt guilty as hell. Had to spend time over the next few days when he was asleep with him on my lap, nappy off, to get air to his bum (warm summer days, not winter!) So in the end I lost more time.

Bonfirenightchaos · 08/11/2024 11:57

I would try and have a look if you can first - you don’t want to wake him unnecessarily! But if he has pooed you would ideally need to change him soon ish as mine would get nappy rash so quickly if I ever missed a poo had happened.

No don't wake him. For the next few weeks you could put a thick layer of sudocrem on his nether regions every time you change a nappy - it will provide a bit of a barrier in case you can't change him when he's sleeping.

One delayed nappy isn’t is t going to give him horrendous nappy rash. Let him sleep and sit down and rest yourself. Also check him for hair ties.
