To think it's actually illegal to . . .

. . . park a car fully on the pavement?

Dh, dd3, ds & I were out for a walk today with ds in the buggy. The streets round here are bad for people parking on the pavement but usually they leave enough room (just) for buggys etc to get by.

There was one car tho' (a big jeep-type thing) which was parked fully on the pavement with no room to get the buggy past on either side. It's a busy road with cars & buses going by all the time & I had to take ds's buggy out on to the road to get around.

The owner came out & saw me looking annoyed & informed me that it's outside her house, she lives there & it's her right to park there. I asked if she couldn't park with 2 wheels on the road to let people past & she said no 'cos she has to keep the road clear for cars & buses

We had a wee bit of an argument & the upshot is that as far as she's concerned she pays her road tax so is legally entitled to park there. I told her she's blocking the path for buggys & wheelchairs - cue a look round & a "I don't see any wheelchairs response". I gave up at that 'cos she obviously couldn't care less but surely there is some kind of law re parking on the pavements?

pretty sure it is illegal to park with any wheel on the pavement. Lots of people park 2 wheels on the pavement round here, and a lot got ticketted recently

Lauriefairycake · 26/04/2008 18:27

it is completely illegal. Call the council or the police and they will come round and give her a ticket for "unnecessary obstruction". You're either allowed to park on the road or you're not. And pavements must be kept clear.

Wisteria · 26/04/2008 18:28

the key there is road tax - you don't pay pavement tax

mumoftwo37 · 26/04/2008 18:37

She shouldn't have been parked there I would report her!

MsHighwater · 26/04/2008 18:37

definitely illegal. I think, in many cases, the 2-wheels-on the pavement thing is tolerated as long as space is left on the pavement but what you describe is, I'm sure, illegal.

Report the selfish mare.

nothing annoys me more than people who park on the pavement simply because they consider their needs and requirements over-rule everybody elses.

I call the police now and I would call the police about that woman with the jeep too, it's not too late.

GreebosWhiskers · 26/04/2008 18:50

What made my blood boil is that she was so smug about it, smirking & making stupid remarks about not seeing any wheelchairs. She just did not care - it's her right to park there & block everyone from passing.

I was actually quite proud that I kept my temper & tried reasoning with her but I just had to leave it in the end as I could see dh getting really riled & didn't want him saying something that might earn him a thumping from her dh

The car was gone when we came back but I'll keep an eye out from now on & if I see it parked like that again I will report it.

Deflate all her tyres and report her to the police.

iamfurious · 26/04/2008 19:46

This is definately illegal. The woman sounds like a nightmare. just call the police, (not the emergency number) and explain that she has completely blocked the pavement and is causing a real hazard to pedestrians etc. Ask them to send the traffic police around.

What a cheek!!!!!

ajandjjmum · 26/04/2008 19:59

Friends of mine had to cut their hedge once because a mum had complained to the council, as she struggled to get the pushchair past.
I would have thought a car was even more of an obstruction!

salsmum · 03/05/2008 01:05

GreebosWhiskers,
We live in a narrow Road and we used to be able to put 2 wheels on pavement.....until council said no. The rule is if you have 'bays' marked out on pavement and sign which looks like tilted car you can park in the bays....But if no bays marked on pavement then it's illegal Where do you live? i'll send my DD round with some of her pals [w/chair users] and they can form 'convoy' of chairs so next time she says I see no w/chairs...Enter Sal n friends over the horizon.

mrschop · 03/05/2008 14:26

It is apparently illegal to park with your wheels on the pavement in London boroughs. Have seen several tickets being given for that.

SanctimoniousCow · 03/05/2008 14:28

It is a parking offense to park with any wheels on the pavement unless specifically signed that way.

I've lost count of the number of people who have had parking tickets parking outside my house for doing this.

If you park all on the road, it blocks the road and it can get busy and so causes hold ups. So many people thoughtfully park with two tyres on the very wide pavement! But that is not legal - so now we very firmly advise people to park on the road whether nor not it leads to traffic chaos!

alfiesbabe · 03/05/2008 17:27

Report her. Specially as she has a fuck-off great child un-friendly jeep.FFS. What a twat.

cazzybabs · 03/05/2008 17:29

it drives me mad....people are so bloody lazy. she should fine a space not blockng the pavement even if is nort right outside her house. i'd scratch her car!

Beelliesebub · 03/05/2008 17:33

Definitely report her...... There's nothing worse than someone being smug and wrong....

naturalblonde · 03/05/2008 22:39

Report her - my dh is a police officer and this is somethingg that really annoys him, so he takes great delight in getting the cars towed away and crushed.

chefswife · 03/05/2008 22:53

I thought it was illegal but around my place there are always people parking on the sidewalks. I?ve never seen anyone here get a ticket however I did see a tow truck get a ticket while he was hooking up a car to be towed. The traffic guy was so secretive, hiding behind the telephone booth till he finished, then quietly placed it on the tow truck drivers window when he wasn?t looking.

moondog · 03/05/2008 22:54

lol at tow truck getting a ticket

FloridaKbear · 03/05/2008 22:55

I would have to walk past with a buggy with a sharp implement (chisel) sticking out and gouge a big line in her car. But I am evil

naturalblonde · 03/05/2008 22:57

And it's ROAD tax, not PAVEMENT tax. Just cos you own a house, you don't own the pavement or road outside it. That really bugs me.

TinkerbellesMum · 03/05/2008 23:00

ROAD Tax not pavement tax!

I used to hate it as a kid when people thought they owned the slice of pavement outside their house (anyone see Eastenders this week?) and would try to move us on - not that we played on anyone's garden or anything, our parents wouldn't have stood for it.

Call the local station next time and tell them you had to walk in the road to get around the car with your pushchair. I'm sure there will be a next time if it was outside her house, I think she's probably more concerned about her car getting scratched by other cars.

ZeMNetterWithZeBigBoobies · 03/05/2008 23:04

You're right, it's illegal.

I would like to ticket big hedge/ low hanging tree owners too.

I think I should take a pair of loppers with me when I go for a walk.....

TinkerbellesMum · 03/05/2008 23:06

lol seems I'm not the only one who thought that!

The estate I used to live on was mainly pedestrianised and we had about 1 space to 5 front doors. It is in the City Centre so we didn't have much parking out of the estate. Because of the location we would have workers parking there in the day (had to get rid of the parking people there because they were a bit nasty - one deliberately hit me with his car and tried to hit me with his fist for stamping on his bonnet! Shortly after I called the police over it the HA decided to sack them) and clubbers at night, meaning we had a lot of problems with parking. One day I was getting in TD's car in the underground carpark and noticed that there was a car without a badge parked on the ramp, so I let down its tires
