my son has just got a job. I’m on UC. Am I allowed to take ‘keep’ off him every month? My UC has gone down approx £350 since he finished full time education. He still lives at home. Thanks

You will just have to declare it to them, they will probably take off the difference.

dont take money from your son. Just let him buy his own food, pay for his phone etc. you don’t need to charge for utilities since you would be using them anyway too and it’s not a huge expense. That way he can save as well so that he can eventually move out.

The DWP expects adults who live in your home to help with your rent. For example, an adult child who still lives at home. The DWP calls these people 'non dependants'.

Your housing element is cut by £91.47 a month for any non dependants who live with you.

Regarding his 'keep' - this might be seen as a lodger who is a family member, which appears to be complicated. I'd suggest taking their advice to talk to a Citizens Advice advisor.

Getting a lodger

What to think about before taking in a lodger and becoming a resident landlord.
