Parking....again!!

Hi, I've raised this a couple of times before but it's still an ongoing problem.
Previously, neighbours were parking on the path outside our gate, blocking our access. Well finally they've stopped doing it after we've had severe words with them. Had a couple of blissful weeks where we could actually get through our gate.
However, someone from a couple of streets away has now decided that THEY want to park on the path. I'm presuming their street is difficult to park in or they think their car will be safer in our estate. So in the last few days they've done exactly the same thing as the neighbour except they now also park on the dropped kerb at the end of the path (not our dropped kerb) when they can't get directly outside ours. They've don't this tonight and there's at least 10 parking spaces further down but they've still parked partly on the path blocking our gate and partly on the dropped kerb. I'm fuming and to make matters worse, one of our friends has started using a wheelchair and has not been able to visit us as they can't get through the gate or even to the top of the path to the dropped kerb...how do I stop this????

Even if the police did have the resources, it's not a police matter, especially if there's no actual parking restrictions and even if there was, that would be an issue for the council not the police. There is no crime. Regardless of how 'impacted' your friend is!

Florally · 06/11/2024 22:32

Agree that police will do nothing - friends were burgled three times and police never came…

you need to put a note on the car. Doesn’t need to ride if you’re not wanting to be confrontational, just informative about the fact they’re blocking a gate and a blocked kerb and you need wheelchair access.

Windywuss · 06/11/2024 22:42

Can you set the alarm off on the car and then have a word with them or are they likely too far away to hear it?

Stroppy people I have had in my life dealt with these issues by causing punctures! (Dropping nails by the tyres etc)

Not sure that's the answer. I would speak to the council.and it is worth talking to the police. You never know. They might ask a pcso to have a look. 🤷🏻It is obstruction if you can't get in and out your gate.

WelshPool · 06/11/2024 22:50

Hinge gate to open outwards.
Don’t imagine they would park there again after its first opening.

Wingedharpy · 06/11/2024 23:01

Put a polite note under their windscreen wiper.

What may seem obvious to you may not be apparent to them eg. they may think those 10 spaces on your diagram "belong" to other residents on your street so, in their head, they're just parking on the end, not appreciating they're impacting on your access.

We once had an irate neighbour post a note through our door complaining about us parking on the road, in front of his house (terraced houses).
The road obviously didn't belong to him anyway but, for the sake of good neighbourly relations, I wrote back explaining why we parked where we did - double yellow lines on road opposite our house but used by a disabled person as their parking space for their huge vehicle.
We were simply trying not to cause an obstruction for other road users eg. buses, bin men etc.
All ended well.
They emigrated to Australia!

The police came to a neighbour with a dropped kerb needing access for a power chair as hers was one meant to be used on the road.

They don't attend for burglaries here, either, but they did attend to the same neighbour after her NDN complained that she used her power chair on the pavement.

MrsCarson · 06/11/2024 23:26

The police came out when it happened here. The drivers kept parking on the pavement in front of friends front door. She and her husband could squeeze out, but they twice trapped her mother inside friends house as she was wheelchair user unable to walk at all. Her poor old Mum could go home she was trapped.
Police got the owners info and got it moved and gave him a talking too, happened again different car, same result. The Mum has passed away now so it's not a problem.

Post It notes overnight.

I've thought about notes and signs but because I don't know them and think they've just moved to the area,I don't know how they'll react and I'm a bit of a scardy cat
,

You’re too scared to put a note on a car? Righto.

HotCrossBunplease · 06/11/2024 23:53

A few questions:

  1. Where do you park your car?
  2. You describe it as a path rather than the pavement. Is there something about it that makes it appear as if it is suitable for parking on? It looks from your diagram that there is no pavement beside the empty spaces further down?
  3. what is the purpose of the dropped kerb?
StaySpicy · 07/11/2024 00:19

Just put a polite note on the car: We need wheelchair access for this gate. Please park considerately. Many thanks.

My neighbours like blocking my drive either side, so now I call local traffic wardens and they come and ticket them. It's an ongoing saga and I've been threatened with violence, traffic wardens have had to argue with these people, police have issued warnings. It's not always as simple as leaving a note. My situation has been ongoing for 9 years. The neighbours have their friends involved.
Can you call your local authority and get traffic wardens to ticket the cars for blocking access?

Tooshyshy123 · 07/11/2024 05:50

Hi thanks for all the replies. I actually emailed the police last night about this and I've just has a response. They did advise initially speaking to person (if I can catch them) and if any further issues they will open an incident log. I suppose I'll need to screw up courage to approach the person now.

Leave a POLITE note. If you come across bolshy people may be more likely to continue because of how they feel you’ve “spoken” to them.

DoublePeonies · 07/11/2024 06:31

Since 2 seperate people think there is a parking spot there, you need to do something to stop it. Can you get double yellow lines marked from your dropped kerb to past your gate?

Take photos now - and everytime it happens.
You need to put a note on ASAP. It doesn't need to be aggressive!

Bagwyllydiart · 07/11/2024 06:40

Get the gate re-hung so as to open outwards.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/11/2024 06:55

Just put a politely worded note on the car.

Dear car owner, can you please refrain from parking on the pavement close to our gate as it restricts access to our home. A wheelchair user also needs to be able to enter through this gate and currently cannot. Regards. Neighbour.

This is the issue my disabled neighbour has been having with her NDN. It's been going on several years. My neighbour has been quite intimidated by their threats and unpleasantness (caused largely by the friends of her NDN who can never be found when she calls the police).

She's recently fitted cameras for her protection but the NDN has called the police saying she's been taking pictures of their DC so the police initially threatened to take them away. They looked at the footage on her phone and noted that she has blanked the neighbour's property off but gave her a warning because her camera caught NDN's DC climbing over the fence to fetch a ball.

They advised she return the ball ASAP to avoid this - while she's sitting in her power chair. A power chair on a soggy lawn for a woman with a back injury. Unbelievable.

I'd be cautious if dealing with a NDN but not so much with other neighbours.

Hi wanted to update everyone. I actually managed to catch the car driver (I previously hadn't been able to catch them) plucked up courage and spoke to them about their parking. Turns out there is a hmo a few streets down for people with drug and alcohol issues and she is a support worker there. She seemed a bit puzzled at first about being asked not to park on dropped kerbs/footpaths (she sounded east European. Not sure if that's relevant) but agreed to not do it again. At least now if she does it again, I can contact the police and say I did what they suggested and now it needs a case opening
