Is 'hope that makes sense' annoying?

Came across this at work recently.

Been in correspondence with this person (more senior & different disciplinary) over the past few days. He always ends every explanation, regardless of how simple and clear the questions and explanations with hope that makes sense.

AIBU to think that this can sounds quite condescending, implying the recipient is lacking mental capacity to digest and understand whatever it is that the sender is trying to relay? If I'm unsure, surely I'll get clarification?

I hate it but for the opposite reason, I think it makes the person saying it sounds so stupid.
Because it's never at the end of a complicated explanation it comes after a perfectly ordinary easy to understand thing.
Hate it so much

I think it's more habit than anything. Plus it comes across as the sender doubting themselves as to whether they've explained something clearly. Almost like they're worried they've waffled. I don't think it's got anything to do with the recipient.

Yes I think it means “I hope I’ve explained that clearly” because they are doubting if they have. I think you’re reading more into it than is there. I hope that makes sense 😚

I use it quite a lot...mainly because I often have to explain quite complicated stuff quite quickly and I'm conscious that whilst it makes sense to me as I know the process / what I'm trying to achieve, it may not be abundantly clear to the recipient, especially if they work in a different area.

Gizlotsmum · 05/11/2024 20:14

I sometimes use it if I have done almost a brain dump or I am asking someone to do something and I am not sure I have explained well enough but I don’t know how to explain better..it is definitely about my ability to explain than their ability to understand

Knowing the person I wouldn't say he is lacking confidence - more the opposite of it. The job demands it.

I think it is quite annoying. I don’t necessarily believe it’s intended to imply you’ll struggle to understand, though. I usually interpret it as someone lacking confidence or being self deprecating regarding their own communication skills. But it’s one of those phrases (like the over-use of the word ‘just’) which should die a death, because it’s weak and redundant and irritating.

Oh no! I use this all the time! Usually when I think I've waffled on, or not really got to the point, or not really explained what I wanted to explain in a way that sounded right and made sense!

Hope people don't think I was being condescending! (I don't care if people think I'm stupid though! I'm not!)

(Life is v hard isn't it!? ... People always read things into things that were never intended! Why can't people just take things at face value - "hope that makes sense?" ... "Yes it does" ... "All good then!" NOT "hope that makes sense?" ... "Well that's a bit condescending/they are a bit stupid".. 😔)
