AIBU to hate fireworks

I don’t mind public displays which are generally sensibly timed, in towns and, crucially, one night a year but round me they’ve been going on for hours every night since last Friday 😭 they’re so loud and my child can’t get to sleep and my pets are all distressed. I know I’m a killjoy but I’d ban them for public sale if it were up to me!

I agree, I love an organised display but there is no need for it in residential streets.

TheTecknician · 05/11/2024 20:04

I agree about them not being for public sale. I don't mind them in principle but they are a lot louder than they were 30-40 years ago, needlessly so. They can look nice without sounding like bombs at close range, can't they ?

And we needed another thread on this because.....?

Absolutely need banning for public sale

Rollonsummerplease · 05/11/2024 20:06

Totally agree.
So noisy these days.
Devastating affect on pets and wildlife.
And really worryingly being used as weapons against innocent passers by and police.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 05/11/2024 20:07

Yes they absolutely should be banned for public sale, there’s enough organised displays that no one needs to buy them and at least you know what time they’ll be and on which day.

Definitely louder and a lot different to the single shot type from year's ago.
Some are akin to professional types for displays not the back garden.

MotherOfGreyhounds · 05/11/2024 20:09

My poor doggo hates them. He's been a total mess last night and this evening. I am sat listening to Classic FM with him at the moment.
Pets aside I generally like them but people let them off in their tiny gardens on our estate, where the houses are packed in like sardines, it's mental.

Also don't disagree about restrictions around sale to the general public. I have witnessed two incidents of teens throwing fireworks into the road in the last week. So bloody dangerous!

I feel that if the public are allowed unlimited fireworks displays then it’s only poetic justice that we’re allowed to start a corresponding number of threads!

I'm so worried about the local wildlife - it's been hours a night since Friday, I'm genuinely concerned for all the little animals that won't understand!

Same for the local farm animals, there's been a fair few in distress too.

Thedishwasherbroke · 05/11/2024 20:13

We had them last week and last weekend - partially because it was Diwali I assume. It seems a bit disrespectful of the fact we live in a multicultural country to suggest they be allowed only one night a year. Either ban them entirely or accept that people from various cultures will want to use them for their own festivities and celebrations.

One of my neighbours set one off as we were walking past and it exploded directly above our head with sparks and debris falling around us. Was terrifying.

I'd support a move to only selling larger fireworks to people who can set them off at least 25m from the edge of their property. Which, effectively would be a ban in a lot of areas.

Oh I agree with this.
I'm feed the wild birds and I know that after a night of fireworks they just don't reappear the next day. Presumably scattered in fright. They do come back eventually but it must be so devastating for them.
