Locomotor Ataxy. 2 years. certified by M Hunter.

That's what I'm seeing too.

Luddite26 · 05/11/2024 17:36

Oooooo interesting and it's on Bram Stoker's death certificate.

YarnChicken · 05/11/2024 17:36

@Thisishallowscream you will also read that this was often a consequence of untreated syphilis, which was incredibly common and hard to treat pre-antibiotics. What year is it?

Yep, it says this

Thisishallowscream · 05/11/2024 17:38

Thank you so much!

It has been driving me crazy trying to figure it out!

It's 1887

Locomotor ataxy - probably locomotor ataxia now? Is it a death certificate?
Probably due to syphilis

YarnChicken · 05/11/2024 17:40

Yes so 1887 there was no treatment for STIs and it's really common to see other causes of death listed on the certificate. I have one in my direcr ancestry, the cause of death was given as "cerebral softening" but this was usually due to syphilis. Might be that the doctor was being literal about what killed him and not the underlying cause, or trying to spare the family's blushes.

Trust me OP, it's nothing to do with your eyesight. I couldn't read it either 😬

Thisishallowscream · 05/11/2024 18:39

Thanks everyone.
How very sad. He was only 34 when he died and left his wife and an 8 year old and 6 year old behind.
I'd like to think he picked it up before he married her as he was a sailor but that says 2 years...

OchAyeTheN00 · 05/11/2024 18:53

it means he’d had that for 2 years, not syphilis.

this is a really interesting bbc segment about a man who lost his entire sense of proprioception.
