Eating Takeaway In A Hospital Waiting Room Do You See It As Unreasonable

Warrior96 · 05/11/2024 12:08

So long story short I ended up with an infected ear piercing and had to see an out of hours doctor at the hospital. My life medical problems always seem to happen on a Saturday or Sunday! Due to it is known to be a nasty infection I was admitted onto the ears nose and throat ward, it was average time 5-6 hours to see a doctor it took me 5 hours. In the meantime in the waiting room a couple sat next to me bought a KFC into the waiting room. I can understand people can get hungry with the long wait but there were a number of nauseous people in that waiting room. I feel they were being a bit selfish and could have bought something more appropriate.

I’d think it a bit déclassé, but as long as I wasn’t next to them (misophonia), I’d not be too bothered.

People have to eat

Okay so how are you getting that sandwich if the cafe is closed, there's no vending machines and you can't leave?

But there is a KFC open in the hospital?

Some posters seem to believe in Magic Universal Sandwiches.

Always available, always suitable for any food requirements even when posters have spelled out that they're unable to eat them, and never smelly enough to bother anyone else whatever the contents.

Remember those posters think food stinks and likely live on half an almond a day, people with disordered eating often enjoy using inflammatory language about completely normal food habits.

Kfc is usually easily delivered, often 24/7 too, how many sandwich shops in your locality are available 24/7 and on deliveroo etc?

A quick scan shows I can have mcdonalds delivered 24/7 from 5 local mcdonalds, within the same area no sandwich delivery at all.

Marsh3melz · 07/11/2024 23:11

@Simonjt excellent point

I had to go to A&E the other week - fortunately I'd eaten a late lunch, but I was there til nearly midnight - the only "food" available was crisps or chocolate from a vending machine.
KFC is smelly, so antisocial - I guess it depends on what is available close to the hospital.
What really hacked me off was the group of about 8, only one of them waiting to be seen who thought it was fine to hang out with takeaways & take up loads of seating.
I had a chair - still pissed me off.

Hoardasauruskaren · 07/11/2024 23:31

The A&E where I work have vending machines for soft drinks & snacks & have recently started providing tea/ coffee & sandwiches in the waiting area. So no need for KFC there and I would be annoyed if patients were bringing in fast food!

What dairy and nut free sandwiches do they offer?

There are several delivery companies who will bring the food to you.

And gluten free!

So I take it there are options to get a salad/ à sandwich/anything that doesn't smell as well. So it's not about nourishment per se but all about "I feel like hot chicken wings today and I don't care if it bothers anyone"

Order your dairy and nut free sandwich or a salad as a take away. What is it with people being obsessed with eating hot food in A&E?

Read the thread. This has already been covered.

Of my nearest hospitals...

1 - Mcdonalds (24 hours) and KFC (until 9pm) are 10 minutes walk, 2 minutes drive, and you can get deliveroo or ubereats deliveries from them. After that it's whatever independent takeaways in the area til around 1am.

2 - KFC (until 9) is 15 minutes walk or deliveroo/ubereats, after that again, independent takeaways until around 2am (nearer to the city centre).

Chances of a sandwich once the cafeteria and shops close (1 does not have a shop at all, volunteer run trolley to wards and a cafe that is also volunteer run) and if you're not actually admitted... nil.

Neither city has a 24 hour supermarket anymore (too small, too rural) and deliveroo/ubereats is very limited to the big brand takeaways and a few independent takeaways (most still have their own delivery service and they don't go as far), not the garages/smaller shops etc.

Can you provide me with some screen shots from deliveroo etc showing me these places that are open 24/7 who serve salad, sandwiches etc.

I see another Magic Universal Sandwich believer has arrived!

This! If you get a sandwich or a salad it won't bother everyone around you. It's like public transport, I get it that people are busy and sometimes need to eat on the go but don't take a hot take away meal that stinks. It's really disgusting when cramped inside .

Judgemental all round. You're in A&E with a sick relative - maybe a dying relative (as I was). Any food will do. I had no money on me to get a take-away but nurses (kind, kind souls) brought me sandwiches and biscuits. If a KFC take-away is all that's on offer I do not see that anyone else has any right to complain. You don't know the circumstances.

But we are not necessarily talking of patients, but people accompanying patients. Why should they not have something hot if they're stuck in A&E waiting for results? Sandwiches and snacks (some of these are smelly btw) don't offer the comfort one may need in what could be a dire situation. All too judgemental about other people's food choices round here!

Even if you are waiting for 12 hours, it won't kill you to go without food, cin fact it is beneficial. I know I am biased as I am autistic and hate watching and hearing people eat at the best of times.

Care to explain how no food for 12 hours is beneficial to a type one diabetic.

TheFallenMadonna · 08/11/2024 11:57

The problem is the waiting times. While it won't kill someone to survive on crisps from the vending machine, it's not reasonable either. Unreasonable situations lead to unreasonable behaviour.

MichaelandKirk · 08/11/2024 11:57

I agree with OP. Some people have no idea how to behave in real life. What they want is what they want. Hungry - buy junk food. Who cares about everyone else and in A&E where people are rolling around in pain, drunk or being sick is it really the right place to be stuffing their faces. It REALLY annoys me and luckily I dont get to A&E very much. Its like a war zone, with whole families turning up like its a blooming day out.

Same at theatres which I visit quite regularly. People chatting, getting up every 30 mins to get another drink and again stuffing themselves with food. I saw a one man show a few years ago and the women behind me started to open a noisy bag of sweets and god knows what else until someone told her to put it away. Do people always have to eat and eat regardless. No wonder we have an obesity issue in this country.

Rant over (and tin hat at the ready)

Bleugh for the people in the waiting room and even more gross to eat in a germy A and E.

You've obviously not sat in A and E for hours on end waiting for news. If you are hungry you must eat and that's going to be whatever is easily available. Some people like KFC. Don't be so judgy.
