DS always wants to wear football kit/socks mainly

8 year old DS always wants to wear his football kit/s anywhere we go. After school he changes and we offer him his regular clothes, like a T shirt and jeans, but he always insists on wearing his football kit. When we push for regular clothes he insists on wearing his football socks beneath his clothing because they ‘fit his feet good’ I find this unusual. Does anybody have a similar problem? Genuinely it’s weird to me but I might be naive? I know this sounds like your regular ‘weirdo’ post, but this is genuinely a problem we’re facing. It’s not a big issue sure, but we wish he would just wear regular clothing. He’s on the pathway with CAHMS for a diagnosis but it would be nice to find somebody to relate to.

DS is the same - has several football kits and wears them exclusively. He doesn't even have jeans anymore - hasn't worn them for a couple of years. The main problem I've had is when it gets cold. He's willing to put on a tracksuit top usually but reluctant to wear trousers. In years past I've bought him skins to go underneath as a workaround.

Yeah I’ve done the same to keep him warm. It’s especially hard when the next season comes along and he’s desperate for the new kit. They’re about £80 each! The things we do to make our kids happy.

Honestly, no need to worry about this. My NT 11 yo always chooses to wear football kit. When he was 7 he wore his Spider-Man costume 99% of the time. So long as he will wear, e.g. school uniform, when needed, this really isn’t a big deal.

I think it sounds pretty standard for a lad that age tbh. Why do you need to stop it? Why fight a battle over it?? It’s not doing any harm.

unless he’s a West Brom fan in which case burn all the kit immediately 😂

😂😂😂😂, he’s not a West Brom supporter but he does support a team which are our rivals. 😂I have to suck up my pride. I’m not picking a battle on this one, I was just trying to understand a bit better, especially with a possible asd diagnosis on the horizon.

If you can swallow that bitter pill you’re a better woman than me op in that case 😀 No I know you’re not picking a battle (badly worded sorry!) just mean don’t sweat it.

Just helpful to understand when others have the same thing going on. I’ve had a lot of judgement on this thread but also a lot of good answers. Thanks for being one of the kinder ones.

@Jamie25 mine started wearing skins under the school PE kit. That took me a while to get on board with but that's how they roll. They live in football kits, haven't worn trousers in 3 years now would always prefer football socks. But the material is so comfy. Couple of expensive football shirts for birthday that they love is actually a bargain for how much they wear them compared to a few 20 quid tops that sit in a drawer.

Mine's EXACTLY the same. Also ND. It's a "thing". 😜 I've weaned him off polyester football socks for bed/at home, and instead got him some black cotton knee high socks and he wears those. He would wear his studded boots everywhere if he could!

Might see if he likes the regular cotton ones, it would be a bit cheaper to maintain 😂

I don't understand the problem, really?

He isn't hurting anyone, including himself.

It could be worse. My nephew at that age wore nothing but pants and a feather boa when he had a choice. He's now in his 20s and is always fully dressed in normal clothes. My friend's daughter disliked buttons at that age. Both are NT. It is incredibly normal for children to have texture based preferences for clothing.

HaleyBrookeandPeyton · 06/11/2024 06:23

My DC has 12 footie kits at the moment & pretty much only wears them when not at school or in pjs. I have no issue with it - they are only clothes & they can wear what they want unless we're going somewhere that needs more formal clothing (not often). They also will not wear anything but shorts to school as they don't like trousers. They are 7.

Just don't stress about it

Seashellssanctuary · 06/11/2024 06:29

This sounds more of a you problem than him.Wearing sports kit is something that boys love, it's comfortable andits what their peers do.

If it was a bizarre item of clothing then maybe you'd have a point but this is a very common choice

TribeofFfive · 06/11/2024 06:32

Well a football kit sounds much more comfortable for jeans than relaxing in after school. I don’t see the issue here at all

whats your advice? 😂

Buy more football kit.

Autumndayz77 · 06/11/2024 06:40

At 8 years old my DS lived in football kits. Made packing really easy for when you went away. I agree this ain’t worth the battle. He can wear ‘skins’ underneath for when it’s colder…

if he loves his footy socks because they are comfortable, you could try some good quality sports socks. My kids are partial to Nike and I like new balance. (I’m quite frugal but don’t like cheap socks.)

This is brilliant!!

Reminds me, my DS got a greatest showman costume for his 6th birthday and he use to wear it all the time, would regularly find him fast asleep with the hat on and cane tucked up in bed with him!
