GP surgery phoned wrong person but made out me and DH are liars

I had a couple of missed calls from my GP surgery today which was odd as I haven't contacted them at all recently. They called again at 5pm and they asked to speak to my son when I explained he was at school they said his dad had contacted them and booked a phone appt for 1130 but they couldn't get hold of his dad on the number given so they were contacting me.

I said that it wasn't my husband who called and that my son is well and at an after school club. They had my sons name and dob and said that they definitely had a call regarding him this morning. I double checked with my DH and he hadn't called so I called the surgery back and said we definitely hadn't contacted them. DH then phoned to say he hadn't contacted them and receptionist said that he definitely called them this morning and an appointment was given but my DH didn't answer his phone. They made out that myself and my husband were liars and that we were wasting NHS resources by now deciding that there was no problem. They must have muddled my son up with someone else but I don't know how as his name is quite unusual and I dont think there would be 2 people with the same name and DOB. I don't know if I should take it further or just leave it. Who ever did phone has obviously not had an appt for their child as they had the totally wrong contact details for them

My GP got me mixed up with someone else when calling about an abnormal test result. We both had abnormal results but hers were more worrying than mine.
The opticians also got my son mixed up with another boy who had a ? Detached retina and my son had a slight scar on his.
Both apologised but you have to be really on top of things to work out they've made an error.
My GP also gave me a printed prescription with someone else's medication, name, address and dob. I took it back and the receptionist snapped at me.

It's unbelievable the poor administration that goes on

Agree and it's everywhere not just at ⁹the doctors. People in general aren't concentrating.

VerityUnreasonble · 04/11/2024 21:04

Assuming they use SystmOne, they could probably just use the phone number the caller gave them to search for who called them. I imagine other record systems have a similar function. Which would show it wasn't the number registered to your DH / DC and if it was a number registered to another patient (although they wouldn't be able to tell you if it was registered to someone else).

Anyway, from your side, I would probably just email the practice manager so they aren't accusing you of booking and then DNA'ing appointments and let them work out how to find out who actually called.

He is adamant he hasn't phoned them and is quite happy to make a complaint - because he isn't happy either that his record is going to have information about another child on it.

The only other thing I can think is a mate could have played a prank on him but why and how I don't know. I don't actually think any of his mates would even know which surgery we are at - as it isn't one of the 2 local ones to us.

I thought a prank call by a friend or even sibling?

Jk987 · 04/11/2024 21:06

I think your son booked it for himself but doesn't want to disclose to you.

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 04/11/2024 21:06

I recently went face to face and made request for prescription for my daughter - verbally, and one on their paper form and goes into a box. A week later the prescriptions weren't in the pharmacy. I called the clinic and they said: we have lost them. I said: how have you lost them??? Both? One put face to face verbally and the other on paper form. So youve lost them , both of them?????

Definitely get in touch with the practice manager......
I'm intrigued, a 16 year old at an after school club 🤔

dc is at after-school club: primary school

dc is at an after school club (as per OP): any number of extra curriculars, linked to school or not

A club that is after school….. like football or chess or something. Not necessarily childcare.

Well if he'd made it in secret about something "embarrassing" then he's hardly going to tell you it was him is he?

OP said the GP said Dad had called though

Rachie1973 · 04/11/2024 21:16

Happens to me quite frequently. Very common name anyway.

Have had arguments over me refusing a diabetes test due to my last pregnancy being affected by gestational diabetes. I’ve never had gestational diabetes and my last ‘baby’ is 22 now.

Have been told I’m due my MMR Booster. I’m too old to have ever been given the initial vaccine! I’ve actually had all those illnesses like many people my age.

Have been hand the other lady’s prescription and have had mine given to her.

Receptionist more or less accused me of lying several times.

QueenCamilla · 04/11/2024 21:21

It was put by a mistake on my file, that I'm allergic to penicillin.
I found out in a hospital, where I was due a life saving surgery as a result of an infection... It created a massive problem! The doctors on the ward were pretty relieved to hear that I'm not allergic to most available antibiotics but they also were scared that if for whatever reason I'm wrong, they could kill me. In the end, they had to take the risk that I'm sane and my file is wrong.

To remove the incorrect entry at my GPs practice, wasn't easy either. For a good while they refused (even though I'd just been on a long course of antibiotics in the hospital!) and I had to write to the practice manager and agree to have that entry removed against their better advice 🙄
I'm still alive and well.

ShamblesRock · 04/11/2024 21:30

It isn't outside the realms of possibility that there is another child with the same name (or a very similar variant)

There is locally another boy with the same name and dob as my son. We picked up on this after being wrongly called to an appointment with CAHMS (both children were under their care) We are just very careful when booking him in to any appointments.

Lifelover16 · 04/11/2024 21:32

Someone had mistakenly put in my 3 year old grandsons records that he was 15cm ( 6”) tall and weighed 95 kg (14 stone) Obviously got the units the wrong way around, should have been 95 cm tall and 15kg weight. Initially we thought it was funny but could be catastrophic if used in error to calculate a dose of medication.

Lemonadeand · 04/11/2024 21:37

Definitely complain as they may need to look at what happened. There’s someone out there who was waiting for a GP to call about their child and the call never came. I had to complain about something recently and they apologised and said they would change their practice. I always think as a confident, articulate first language English speaker it’s incumbent on me to raise issues like this because there may be a more vulnerable person affected who isnt able to advocate for themselves.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 04/11/2024 21:39

I found out out on my medical notes that I was diagnosed in the past with testiclular cancer when I asked about how that occurred, apparently I went through chemo and radiotherapy treatments for it.

I'm a woman, I've never had cancer or been treated for it and I don't have testes and never had.. my notes have now been amended.

It still pops up occasionally on hospital records despite the correction but the GP staff were most helpful and efficient once they established that it was a mans records who got combined with mine at some point. My first name is very definitely a female name and my surname is unusual so who knows

another1bitestheduck · 04/11/2024 20:49

what, you think extra-curricular activities stop at age 11? It's a club he does after school, why would that need an age limit?

the amount of shit sherlocks on here does make me laugh...

Make a complaint to the practice manager and raise concerns both about the way the receptionist spoke to you and possible GDPR issues. I'd be very surprised if the calls aren't recorded.

I'm intrigued myself, what is the situation with after school clubs in secondary comprehensive schools?

Chess club, football practice, computers club. Yoga, Archery, homework club. I'm not sure what's so unusual about any of these.

Fizzygoo · 04/11/2024 21:45

What’s with the after school 👀👀?

I have one in yr 11and one in yr 13 and they both have after school revision/ clubs 3 times a week at least and it’s a big standard comp

Did your husband have missed calls too? Or who were they calling before they tried you?

"...they couldn't get hold of his dad on the number given so they were contacting me."

Yes I saw that bit, but if OPs DH wasn't getting those calls, then chances are they had the wrong people.

As the OP confirmed after I asked - it wasn't her DHs number

But then how come the DH didn't recognise the number that the surgery had called?

Hockey, football, basketball, netball, drama, chess, choir... Genuine question - are you familiar with the UK's secondary school set-up?

Nothing! My kids are in primary. I was hoping after school activities don't just vanish once they join secondaries

I recently changed to DHs GP who reading my notes from the old surgery states she found it harf to believe I'd ever been in the category of 'morbidly obese.' Whoever had written my weight down in 2014 literally mixed up kg with lbs. Anyway, I got offered the covid vaccines earlier than others, could never work out why- think i know now?!

This happened with my DS - they'd mistaken his height which made him morbidly obese ( took them a year to write to me though). I had to send a photo of him on holiday in swim shorts so they could see he was a normal size!

niadainud · 04/11/2024 22:02

My GP practice is pretty incompetent. They once sent me a message to say they had made an appointment for me (this was totally feasible as I was due to see the doctor) but it turned out to be an admin appointment in the doctor's diary. Plus many other cock-ups.

Addictedtohotbaths · 04/11/2024 22:04

JC03745 · 04/11/2024 19:10

I too was wondering if your son made the appointment himself- but doesn't want to admit it?

If not, I'd would write to the practice manager because clearly their admin/system has made an error. Yes, we are all human, but this might be a reoccurring error.

When I got access to my medical file, I found that I apparently used to chew 1.6kg of chewing tobacco A DAY! I've never tried it, but surely that is an incredible amount to get through in a week, let alone per day? I eventually got it removed, when I worked out it was the date I stopped cigarette smoking, but I had to convince the GP several times that it wasn't true and an error at their end!

Bahaha 1.6kg a day!
