Neighbours' motorhome

Our neighbours intend to permanently park a large motorhome on their driveway. The 20 or so homes in our cul-de-sac are all subject to the same restrictive covenants, one of which prohibits parking ‘boats, caravans or similar’ vehicles in front of the properties. We’ve already raised our concerns with them, highlighting both the covenants and the potential impact on our property value.

The motorhome would be parked in a highly visible part of the estate, detracting from the overall appearance of the area. Additionally, their driveway isn’t large enough to fully accommodate a vehicle of that size, meaning it would significantly overhang the pavement.

We now face a few options: accept the situation, attempt to persuade them to reconsider, or seek legal advice. Advice from others that have been in a similar situation would be particularly helpful.

You sound like a nightmare, having a motorhome on the next drive is not going to impact you at all
. Just get on with your life

It blocks light in street facing living rooms in the houses either side depending on the time of day - so de-values the neighbours homes.

Hyacinth Bucket is alive and well then.

Maybe the OP bought the house because of these covenants and expects them to be adhered to?

Advice Bluefinch2? Live and let live. Mind your own beeswax. Just get on with your lives and let other people get on with theirs. There are more important issues in the world to worry about ...potholes, the dwindling hedgehog population, the increase in Utility bills, Starmer drama, climate change..

But it is their business if it cuts off their light from outdoors and restricts their normal view.

I’d hate to live on your road. Busy bodies.

Sticking up for yourself is not being a busy body.

Bet these are also people who moan about knickers and bras being hung out on washing lines

😂

My friend's granny was shocked that she hung washing out on a Sunday, regardless of whether it included bras and knickers!

I hang out my fancy ones and sometimes I let them get darked on as well and even rained on 🤫

Felixfox · 04/11/2024 20:03

Anyone thinking that a motorhome parked in these circumstances is ok clearly owns a motorhome. Because everyone else knows that they look awful and sticking them in plain sight of everyone else’s homes is selfish and entitled. And possibly stupid.
come and get me, I’m ready for it 😂

Snap. Although my pants are huge and could probably house a small family.

And at the risk of fire and brimstone raining down...I hang dd's trainers bras out too

I cannot afford a motorhome 😭😫

There is a restrictive covenant in our area too, however they are pretty useless. My immediate neighbour rents her driveway ( its actually a deceased relatives of hers house and the house is empty) out and there was a skanky old caravan parked there for a year which looked really unsafe as on a considerable slope and "secured" with a few bricks.
She also rents out the rooms individually which causes us issues but council is not interested , restrictive covenant or missing license regardless.

Over covid lock down one of the local busy bodies complained to the police cos my ndn and I were chatting over the wall in our respective gardens and inhad walked theough hers. She was having her lunch and I was hanging my pants out. Must have been a slow day for them cos the cops rocked up to have a chat 🤣🤣

We did point out that as we live in a run of terraces I have no choice but to walk through her garden to access mine cos I am the last in the run. I'm not sure their response was particularly official but they did enjoy a cuppa and a bun whilst they laughed with us about the idiot up the street.

Unless the council are the covenant owner, then they wouldn't be. Planning and building regs are their bag. Not covenants necessarily.

bluebee17 · 04/11/2024 20:54

Nothing to stop them parking on the road right outside your house if you do kick up to much of a fuss

Plmnki · 04/11/2024 21:03

The first post had great advice. I would go with that. A motor home is a horrible eyesore and the light blocking issue is hideous. Yes it will affect property values. You have my full sympathy.

I would suggest you get your local councillor on board too asap to see what they can do to get the council ready to advise you also - the pavement overhanging issue is a huge issue and they should enforce that.

ignore the dickheads who seems to love motor homes parked outside houses. Morons.

Skippydoodle · 04/11/2024 21:13

The only enforcement would be a civil action. Make sure you have at least £100k+ to burn.

It's a simple application to the county court for injunctive relief probably with costs awarded against the offending party if successful. You are being ridiculous.

Princessbananahamock · 05/11/2024 04:11

@BlueFinch2
Does your covenant have restrictions on motor vehicles ie vans size of vans?
Boats, caravans and similar hmm basically that implies anything that is towed via trailer hitch.
Motor homes/camper vans are vehicles so totally different from a caravan. Had you stated no vans commercial or otherwise were on your covenant. Well it could be argued that your neighbours vehicle would be classed as a van because it’s a camper van(motor home).
Seems your only recourse is the overhanging

From what you’ve stated (so far) is wrote on covenant motorhome is fine. You may find that they don’t keep it longer than next summer but when the novelty wears off and the running costs become apparent. Relatives have one barely used and they have stated that the costs of pitching up and using ferries are getting worse.

Brahumbug · 05/11/2024 06:15

Who is the beneficiary of the covenant? The land owner, the developer? Only the beneficiary can enforce the covenant.

Well, @BlueFinch2 - it's 65% in your favour. But judging from the general tenor of this thread, the majority of posters have a passion for motor homes outside their homes/in the general vicinity and you are being outrageously precious to care or even notice 🤷‍♀️
