If you don't want to pay that much and it's what's been agreed, then don't take part.

JimPanzee · 04/11/2024 11:58

Fiver is plenty in that scenario

DayTimeRoses · 04/11/2024 11:58

At DP's work it's £7 and has to be from a charity shop.

Edited to add: I don't have secret santa at my work.

roses2 · 04/11/2024 11:59

We have a £5 charity shop purchase.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 12:01

£5 is fine.
I don't quite understand the charity shop rule though.

UhhhhhhhOK · 04/11/2024 12:01

That £5 charity shop thing is a cool idea.

We usually do £10

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 12:07

@UhhhhhhhOK why a charity shop though?

hanali · 04/11/2024 12:08

£10 is usually the rate. What can you actually buy with £5 these days anyway tho??

wizzler · 04/11/2024 12:09

We do £10 from a charity shop

Dotto · 04/11/2024 12:10

£5, local authority employees. Plenty available for under £5 inc chocs, mini wines, biscuits etc

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 04/11/2024 12:14

£5

PinkyFlamingo · 04/11/2024 12:16

£10

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 12:17

@hanali
£5....
£2.50 paperback from The Works
£2 tree decoration from many places
= £4.50
or
£3.50 Lego Polybag
99p chocolate Santa from Lidl/Aldi
= £4.49
That's just 2 examples. Obviously it would be person specific !

sunshineandshowers40 · 04/11/2024 12:17

Small team. £5 was suggested but we all agreed £10 would be better as you can't really get anything for £5.

JosieB68 · 04/11/2024 12:18

Ours has been set at £15 this year and a charity donation on top, no consultation just decided by someone and yes I think that’s too much.

Cheshireicecream · 04/11/2024 12:19

We have some German colleagues who introduced the concept of 'schrottwichteln' to the office. Costs nothing, and loads of fun.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 12:01

I'm guessing it's because buying the secret santa gift also benefits a charity rather than buying from a high street shop.

TubeScreamer · 04/11/2024 12:32

We do £10

It's a very restricted amount that more than likely many people sat round the table will end up recieving the same gift.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 12:38

@amusedbush if you live somewhere that the charity shops aren't very good though then you're stuck.
If the idea is to raise money for charity just get everyone to donate to a chosen charity and forget the Secret Santa.

Nikitaspearlearring · 04/11/2024 12:38

I think £5 is fine. Buying something they don't need for someone you don't really know is a bit daft anyway, but it's a nice token, and makes you think that someone has actually thought about you. I don't see why the token should be more than £5 - people have better ways of spending their hard-earned cash. I love the charity shop idea.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 12:39

@hanali does that matter if people all receive similar things?

Nikitaspearlearring · 04/11/2024 12:41

amusedbush · 04/11/2024 12:32

I'm guessing it's because buying the secret santa gift also benefits a charity rather than buying from a high street shop.

Maybe also because of the challenge - people ending up with a paperback or a mug, or something random rather than the usual chocs.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 04/11/2024 12:42

A tenner is pretty standard, so that sounds ok to me.

HelloSunshine11 · 04/11/2024 12:44

We do a ballpark tenner, pre-loved, home made or consumable encouraged - mainly to avoid a load of plastic tat that will never be touched again being bought.
