Teething baby waking hourly - help!

hello all

I am just looking for some advice.

my 10 month old has been teething. We have had 3 teeth come through in a row and baby is not sleeping. I have lost track of how long this has been going on for now. A good 4 weeks if not longer and we are struggling to cope. Baby shares a room with her sister (3). There isn’t room for a cot in our bedroom.

shes waking every hour and it’s exhausting. Sometimes she nurses back to sleep but more often she will fall back to sleep within 5 minutes of me picking her up, only to wake again an hour later. She’s had some calpol and teething granules/bonjela and isn’t nursing well (had frozen milk to use in bottles). Milk supply is dwindling from shorter nursing sessions and running out of frozen milk. I will get her some formula.

how can I help baby to settle at night abit better or do I have to just ride it out? I don’t want to do the cry it out method as I don’t like it but also don’t want her to wake her sister up. I don’t want to take her into bed with me and Dh as he’s a heavy sleeper.

I’m considering making a bed on the livingroom
floor out of desperation but would prefer to help her to soothe herself in her cot.
she won’t settle if I shush or pat her. I have to pick her up. She has a dummy but she spits it out as she falls asleep.

im not sure if this even makes sense as I am so tired. I have school and nursery runs to do as I have 3 dc so can’t catch up on sleep either!

any advice? Thanks! ❤️

Pop her in with you - best comfort. Ignore the people who say it's bad for the kids, it's not - they want their parents.

Have you tried calpol poor thing is probably in pain and overtired.

otherwise bed in the living room and ride it out poor baby and mum

jolota · 04/11/2024 12:41

I tried to give calpol every time they woke (though maybe try smaller doses than usual as not sure if hourly would be too much?) as that seemed to help them get longer stretches.
But other than that, cosleeping was a saviour - they're in pain and upset so they're going to wake up often and need comfort.
I kicked my husband out to the spare room but now we use a floor bed in her room so there's space for us to go to her when she wakes in the night.

Sounds like my daughter. 2 weeks ago she had no teeth, now she has 3 with another 2 currently looking like they are about to arrive! Also up every hour, even with pain relief.

I’m co-sleeping with her as that is the quickest way to get her back to sleep and she seems to wake up less as well. Think you just have to do what you have to do to get through it and then put her back in her cot when teething is over.

Use nurofen and anbesol liquid for pain relief, much better than calpol. The powders aren’t medicine and they’re mostly just sugar so ditch them.

minipie · 04/11/2024 12:46

Nurofen worked better for teething than calpol IME. It reduces inflammation as well as pain. You can alternate it with calpol too (so if calpol is only allowed every 4 hours, you can give nurofen in between).

Agree about co sleeping if it helps - it never did for us!

Didimum · 04/11/2024 12:49

I would try Nurofen instead of Carol - it's better for inflammation. The over tiredness may be compounding now rather than just the teeth.

tangobravo · 04/11/2024 12:59

Nurofen before bed, Calpol after a few hours then back to nurofen. Remember no more than correct dosage for nurofen in 24 hours. DH sleep downstairs for a few nights and bring her in with you. It's so hard!! Good luck.

Thanks all for the advice! I hadn’t even considered calpol so I will give that a go and set up a bed on the floor in her room. I forgot about Anbesol too!

we had to give her piriton today )under nurses advice) due to an unexpected allergic reaction so I’m hoping it will help her sleep!

thank you for all the support!
