Friend asking for dog food 'compensation'

dogbiscuitsareforlife · 04/11/2024 10:43

What do you make of this.

One of my school mum friends, (I'll call her Mary) has a dog and we often bump into each other out for dog walks and walk along together. Not super close, but chatty and friendly

Last week Mary told me she had been let down by a dog sitter for a holiday. She couldn't find anyone so I offered to help. Our dogs get on well and I'm used to having more than one, although at the moment only have one. She asked how much I'd charge but I said no bother just provide his usual food and treats, which she did. Her dogs food is a superior top end brand to the food I give mine.

All was great whilst we had him, but when feeding, the dogs seemed to favour each others food and swapped between bowls. I didn't think too much of it but did mention it to one of the other mums at the school gates in a jokey way, saying my dog obviously preferred the more expensive brand to the supermarket stuff I provided. Whereas her dog really liked the cheaper stuff.

Mary has obviously been told and today asked me if I fed my dog her dogs food. I was a bit taken aback but explained the above and of course I did give her dog its own food but sometimes dogs want what the other dog has.

She was very cold and told me to compensate her for any tins I gave my dog as she wasn't there to provide for my animal! I'm totally bemused, I saved her £100's in dog sitting fees and although I'm not now going to charge her she must see she is totally unfair.

Or am I wrong and should I buy a pack of 4 tins to give her. My DH says ignore but I don't want bad feeling.

I’d give her an invoice at the school gates for the going rate for looking after her dog and deduct the cost of the 4 tins from that. I’m a petty bitch though and wouldn’t care if there’s an atmosphere after.

OpenHeartZoo · 05/11/2024 19:18

She’s being outrageous 😂

If it were me I’d send either one of the messages below:

Mary,
My time (spent sitting your dog for free) is worth 1000 times more than half a tin of dog food. You are not the one who’s in deficit here.

I’m happy to pay for the dog food if you’re happy to pay my pet sitting invoice.

—-

Hi Mary,

As per your request, I estimate my dog on the one occasion ate ‘X’grams of your dogs food and your dog ate around the same of my dog food. ‘X’grams of your dog food (less the cost of my dog food that your dog ate) would come to £’X’.

£X translates as roughly ‘X’ tins, which you will find enclosed. — (This amount should be very small, to illustrate pettiness) —

If I were to deduct the value of a pet sitting invoice from this amount, you would owe me somewhere in the region of 1000 tins.
But please, keep that change.

She’s a CF of the highest order!
I’d can this friendship - even though she thinks she’s your chum, she’s definitely not a pal. Who would kibble over a bit of dog food!

apostrophewoman · 04/11/2024 10:46

Offer to recompense her for the tins when she's paid you £40 a night for dog boarding.

This 100%

Teenyweenytinytrees · 05/11/2024 19:22

I actually can't believe this!! What a horrible woman.

ChimneyRock · 05/11/2024 19:26

Work out the difference between your cheap stuff and her poncey stuff and hand cash over to her at the school gate. In small coins.

Purplequestionmark · 05/11/2024 19:28

Surely you aren't going to give these tins of food? Why would you on principle! You owe her FA.

Noononoo · 05/11/2024 19:30

That’s ludicrous! When I look after my daughter’s dog and it joins mine she supplies me with loads of food and treats for them knowing they will all eat the same at the same time. Silly to give them different food so if Mary was fussy about what her dog ate she should have provided enough for all. Dogs also don’t know which is theirs, they don’t care which bowl. But I do notice that when they are all fed together they gobble it all up though will check the others don’t have something more tasty😋
I'm so sorry this woman has spoiled your generous act for all your sakes. It’s gobsmacking.

bellocchild · 05/11/2024 19:30

Animals ALWAYS want what the other guy is eating! When we had three cats, we fed them three identical portions of exactly the same cat food morning and evening, and they wasted a lot of time swapping bowls...

Swivelhead · 05/11/2024 19:34

My dog only wants what the humans are eating.

Then she hops over the fence to see what the cat next door is eating.

Also, she sits in the front garden with her snout through the fence waiting for the man with treats who gets off the 6 30pm-ish bus and walks past our house.

Then she comes inside and observes us minutely to see what evening snacks we might try to sneak.

Her food bowl is always still full when we go to bed, but polished clean in the morning!

Mumof2girls2121 · 05/11/2024 19:35

Give her an Invoice for your rates and tell her to deduct the half can of dog food your dog stole 🤣 what a brat she sounds!

Mandaxx25 · 05/11/2024 19:35

Not that it makes it ok but I think she's taken it as your dog liked her dogs food so you just fed all her dog food to your dog as well as her dog. Rather than that your dog just ate the food and her dog your dogs food. Regardless, I'd buy her the food and say you're quite right, you're not here to provide for my dog and I'm not here to dog sit yours, so here's your food and kindly don't speak to me again.

Pippyls67 · 05/11/2024 19:37

Wow! Poor dog living with a woman like her. Look down your nose, snort with indignation, roll your eyes - then 180* and ignore.

CalmBalonz · 05/11/2024 19:38

Bill her for the dog sitting then do not bother with her again. Ungrateful cow and nice one for the arsehole who was shit stirring the story with her.

cadburyegg · 05/11/2024 19:46

Lol this reminds me of when my friend lived in my spare room for 18 months rent free and dared to complain when my then 8 year old helped himself to some of "her" cereal (which I'd bought) because he thought it was ours.

YANBU OP. As a pp says, no good deed goes unpunished. With some people, the more you do for them, the less appreciative they are, because they take it for granted.

Pinkyandperkyofyesteryear · 05/11/2024 19:59

I’d write her a bill for the dog sitting charges at £45 per day. I’d hand her the bill and say out of courtesy I’ve deducted the cost of the dog food. Cash would be preferable thank you!

Horses7 · 05/11/2024 20:01

Send her a bill detailing all aspects of her dogs care and itemised. You sound like a good friend she sounds like a pick your own four letter word 🤣

Mirabai · 05/11/2024 20:04

I’d buy the tins, stick a bow on them and never speak to her again.

TwistedWonder · 05/11/2024 20:05

Purplequestionmark · 05/11/2024 19:28

Surely you aren't going to give these tins of food? Why would you on principle! You owe her FA.

I agree. There would be more chance of me growing another head than giving the tight arse even a spoonful of dog food the CF.

I think I’d gave up say ‘just deduct the cost of the food off what you planned to pay me for dog sitting, that’s easiest way Mary’

I personally couldn’t give a toss about causing bad feeling - this is on her not you.

LinaLouLa · 05/11/2024 20:16

dogbiscuitsareforlife · 04/11/2024 14:58

I won't be at school gates until end of week although I may see Mary out on dog walk before then if we bump into each other.
I will get the dog food and am thinking I'll hand it to her in front of other mums and be vocal about 'owing' it. Someone's bound to ask so I can then tell them the reason.

Don't give her any tins! You gave her what the dog didn't eat and gave her dog free board and care.
If she brings it up again, I'd hand her an invoice for your services!

MadnessIsMyMiddleName · 05/11/2024 20:20

I would be so petty by return that I would buy one tin of the expensive food, give your dog half of it, and then give her the half that was left over, having tucked a bill into the empty part of the can for services rendered as a dog sitter. I would also ask her if she's had a sense of humour bypass while she was away. What a bitch!!!

peanutmother · 05/11/2024 20:25

Why didn't you say to her face that she's a CF worthy of her own AIBU thread?

DowntonNabby · 05/11/2024 20:27

Don't replace the food! Be honest and say you're shocked she's even dared to ask considering how much money you saved her in dog sitting/boarding fees. If she persists, send her an invoice with the price of the food taken off.

ilovesushi · 05/11/2024 20:31

I would be so grateful to anyone looking after my dog, keeping her safe and happy, and I'd be additionally delighted that she was going to be mucking in with other dogs. I'd want to give her half an opened tin back.

Julietta05 · 05/11/2024 20:38

I would make an invoice for dog sitting with your bank account and on the bottom put 'good manners cost nothing'.

I don't think I would bother with the food.
