To expect my burnt tongue to have healed by now?

I burnt my tongue last Sunday (27th Oct) whilst eating some extremely hot cauliflower cheese! I thought it would have healed by now but the tip is still sore - there was a sore/blister on it over the weekend which seems to have gone down but it's still red/inflamed and it feels funny / tingly. I also keep rubbing my teeth over it so see where the sore bit is.

Should it have settled by now and do I need some treatment, or am I being impatient?

Give it another week, then see doc if no improvement

ok thanks. It just feels weird and numb/tingly and worried it's not healing / discomfort won't go!

I would try a mouth ulcer treatment, like bonjela, on it. It would help with the pain, inflammation and has antiseptic properties.

I don’t know whether to speak to my GP today. The tip looks really red and inflamed and a different colour to the rest of my tongue. Argh it’s uncomfortable

It can takes ages to fully heal. Bung some bongela on it. If it's still bad next week I'd call 111.

I burnt the roof of my mouth on similar food and it took ages to heal fully. I would give it a few more days and maybe try and stop rubbing at it.

It takes ages in my experience.

ok will give it more time then to heal. I have just tried bonjela which hasn't really helped and seemed to have made the rest of my tongue itchy. It also looks white too but I don't think it's oral thrush.

An 'old wives tale' but my mother always used to say to put sugar on a burnt tongue! Goodness know if it works though but worth a try!

There is no real treatment for a burnt tongue, bonjela is a pain releif and nothing more, and can sometimes worsen

The best thing you can do is just leave it alone. Some gentle salt water rinse will help present infection but a burn with blistering is going to take time to heal

mauvish · 04/11/2024 12:23

Not the same, but I get a lot of mouth ulcers and find bonjela absolutely useless.

I use either difflam spray or corsodyl spray on my ulcers, both seem to ease the discomfort and help healing. Both are easy to use - just aim and fire! Both are available to buy in the pharmacy.

Be careful using anything with numbing stuff in it (like anbesol) you don't want it to be so numb that you end up biting it.

Sounds sore. Drink icy cold drinks and hang in there, but if you think it needs to be seen, try a pharmacist first?

Stop running your teeth over it, you’re delaying the healing! Salt water rinse twice a day - do it before your brush your teeth to take the taste away. Drink water after you eat to help remove any food debris and go for softer foods while you’re healing. Totally normal to see physical changes as you heal and can take 2-6 weeks to heal, although it’s usually towards the lower end of that range.

Stop playing with it, that will stop it healing. There's nothing much anyone can do, it'll take as long as it takes.
