To warn you all about the Braun IPL device

NC for this so it won't link to my other posts. I am a medical doctor (admittedly in a field as far away from Dermatology as you can get) but feel embarrassed and ashamed that my vanity got the better of my judgement. I hesitated to write this but as I expect the IPL devices will be going on Black Friday deals soon I wanted to share with others what I wish I had known a year ago.

I bought the Braun IPL Silk-Expert Pro 5 and used it on a low setting. I followed all the instructions. It felt like it was burning at the time, but I read that it was common to feel painful at first before getting used to it, so grit my teeth and carried on. I noticed some bar marks a few days later, which were intensely itchy, but these faded over a couple of weeks so I stupidly carried on. I wanted lovely hair free legs!

It was actually fine for a few months, when I used it weekly. Maybe my skin built up a tolerance to it? I don't know. It seemed to be having an effect. I then had a break of about a month, and used it again.

Huge mistake. Despite using on a low setting, the same as before, I managed to give myself second degree burns which have permanently scarred. It's awful. Long story short - I have dark burn marks on my arms and legs that are not going to go away.

Braun were initially helpful and responsive. After establishing that I had followed all the directions to the letter, they suggested that I might have gone over the same area twice. Very possibly I did this by accident - you can't see where you have already gone during a session, so it's easy to do. They booked a pick up the device and advised that they would arrange to refund me once received. (This was all I asked for - I haven't tried to claim anything further - I accept it was a risk that I took). This was a month ago; tracking shows it was delivered, which they have acknowledged, but have now stopped responding to my emails. I don't really care any more as a refund won't un-scar me.

My dermatologist friend (how I wish I'd asked her before rather than after burning myself) has since told me that these are really not devices that should be used by untrained people at home. She is lovely but I felt so stupid when she said this as it's so obvious in retrospect. I am sure there are a lot of people who have no issues but please just consider if it is worth the risk.

I have found this surprisingly upsetting to write so I'm not sure I can actually bring myself to come back to this thread routinely. It's more of a PSA I felt duty bound to share, as I searched MN for experiences before buying mine. I will check my PMs though if anyone has specific questions, and will update it if Braun eventually do get back to me.

I have a friend who this happened to and I vaguely remember hearing her talk about how she read loads of other stories.

Bio oil and sunscreen religiously (she became a vampire for a long time) and they have faded almost to nothing. With some fake tan her skin looks incredibly blended with the scars now. Just wanted to share this so you have hope x

SensibleSigma · 03/11/2024 18:54

Thank you for warning us, OP. You can’t be expected to know that a product sold specifically to use at home, isn’t actually safe for that purpose.

BeatriceAndLottie · 03/11/2024 18:56

Thanks for this OP. I was seriously considering buying this product since it’s on sale for Black Friday. Seemed a bit too good to be true!!

MiddleParking · 03/11/2024 18:59

That’s dreadful, OP. Mine gave me a murderous rash on my legs whenever I used it there, which stopped me being able to sleep or basically enjoy anything at all until I admitted defeat and stopped using it on them. It’s fine (good) on my underarms and bikini line but I wouldn’t have paid that much for it had I known I wouldn’t be able to use it on my legs.

BalletCat · 03/11/2024 19:05

I have very fair and sensitive skin and it stung a bit but never marked me and was a life saver for my body image. I have PCOS and my lower back and butgocks and thighs and tummy were covered in thick dark hair. The IPL banished the lot! Had friends have similar positive experiences. I wonder why you had an adverse reaction when a lot of people are fine with them?

Hekett · 03/11/2024 19:08

DD and I both used it and I can’t say that either of us experienced this. Sorry that happened to you.

DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole · 03/11/2024 19:23

Sorry this happened to you.

I have very fair and pretty sensitive skin. It have used mine on highest setting on legs, bikini line, underarms and top lip with no issues at all - no irritation, no burning sensation, no pain.

I wonder if it's either a faulty device or you have sensitive skin in some way? Also I did make sure but it use AHA exfoliants for 7 days before using.

HazelLion · 03/11/2024 19:25

Is your skin darker? It's only for people with lighter skin tones. I'm very fair skinned with dark hair and I've used the Braun IPL without any issues whatsoever.

JMSA · 03/11/2024 19:25

Are these the things that you can only use if dark-haired?
Blondes and redheads are a big no-no, from what I've heard.
Sorry this happened to you, OP. It's not your fault Flowers

3luckystars · 03/11/2024 19:30

Thanks for the advice.

Namecbbc · 03/11/2024 19:39

To be fair, the risks associated with them and who should not use ipl are fairly clearly stated, plus I’m surprised that you carried on even though you had a skin reaction that showed marks and itching? I have had my Braun for a number of years and now also have a Philips as I’m treating my 2 daughters…none of us have ever had any problems but seeing as I had it done in a clinic when I was younger I perhaps am a stickler for using it more evenly spaced out. Also, I don’t think people realise that even if they have used it with no problems before, if you get a sun tan then you might not be able to use it until the tan has faded, especially because sun tans also can lighten hair….maybe this should be more clearly stated. Hence I only ever treat in winter!

NormaJoan · 03/11/2024 19:44

I’m fair skinned with dark hair. I have been using my IPL ( same model as yours) for 3 years with no issues, although using less and less as is the point of it of course. My daughter and granddaughters also use one without problem. Sorry you have had such a bad experience.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 03/11/2024 19:45

This sounds awful OP. Sorry it happened to you.
What is your hair colour/skin tone?

Laptoppie · 03/11/2024 19:47

I love mine, been using it for years and no issues- it is good people are aware there are potential risks though. It definitely doesn't work on some hair, and it did take me a while to get my head around the instructions.

GreenAlkanet · 03/11/2024 19:58

Like others, I am fair skinned and dark haired and have been using mine without issue for years.

I am very sorry this happened to you OP, and I agree that putting warning stories out about adverse reactions is a good thing to do.

But many people do use them perfectly safely at home.

OrNo · 03/11/2024 20:07

I have the Philips Lumea IPL and it's been absolutely amazing getting rid of my unwanted hair in multiple places. It has 5 strength settings and there are some areas I couldn't go higher than 3 on because it felt like a little electric shock or being flicked hard. Not sure if the Braun only has a super strong setting?

The overlapping areas thing is known about by Philips and it doesn't warn against it and say it could cause burn stripes.

cakewench · 03/11/2024 20:09

Fair skinned with black hair here. I’ve used the Braun as well as Philips devices with no issues.

However, I did experience the professional version of IPL in the late 90s, so I suppose I knew what to expect.

The light reacts to darkness which is why the ideal combination listed is always fair skin with dark hair. The darker the skin, the more the light will be absorbed by the skin instead of the hairs, I believe.

It’s very disappointing to hear that they’ve stopped responding to you!

cleowasmycat · 03/11/2024 20:27

Sorry you had an awful experience. I love my IPL. My legs and armpits are now completely hairless and I wish I'd bought it years ago!! No pain or burning and my daughter also uses it.

BubblinTrouble · 03/11/2024 20:30

I have dark skin and dark hair and had no issues.

I also went to a clinic for a while but had no luck. I found the IPL much better personally.

But thank you for sharing your experience. Think it would be good to share what skin type and hair type you have too if you get a moment.

CareerChange24 · 03/11/2024 20:30

Wow thank you for this warning. Was going to buy in Black Friday but it’s clearly not worth the risk

Chypre · 03/11/2024 20:39

How odd! So sorry that happened to you. Do you have any other skin conditions, maybe sun/uv sensitive skin? I’ve been using my Brain IPL for 2 years with no issues whatsoever, smooth legs/pits/bits. Best investment after Invisalign (which also gets some criticism but I love my experience and results).

Lindy2 · 03/11/2024 20:53

I've used my Braun for years and have never had any issues.

I'm really surprised that this happened to you. Mine actually sets the power level based upon your skin tone so it should be very difficult to overdo it. Mine is a pretty basic model too. Did you keep going over the same areas? It's once a week and one zap per area. If you do too much or too often it might cause issues.

redalex261 · 03/11/2024 20:54

That's terrible OP, thank you for warning everyone. I really wanted one of these because I'm rather hairy but the cost made me defer buying one. I may have splurged on Black Friday deal. Won't now. Please persevere with bio oil and massaging the area a couple of times every day. It helped scarring even on my ultra fair skin.

AlwaysGinPlease · 03/11/2024 22:39

I think you either got a faulty one or more than likely, you are just using it incorrectly OP. I have one, I raved about it so much that my sister, sister in law, best friend and two women I work with all got them on my recommendation ( should have got commission!) and none have had any issues at all. I love it. I believe this is user error.

Game0fCrones · 03/11/2024 22:45

Ive used this for over two years and havent had a problem (pale skin, mousy coloured hair). Even on the highest setting.

I did get burns from having IPL done professionally on my face by a doctor though. He said he couldnt understand how it had happened. The burns faded after roughly four months.

Very strange.
