To ask how much are you paying for 11 plus tuition?

I'll be honest, I'm an 11 plus tutor.

I'm fully booked with a long waiting list and rarely have an empty space for more than a week or so. I'm wondering whether I should raise my prices, or not.

I'd love to know roughly where in the UK you are, and how much you pay for 1:1 in person 11 plus tuition.

We didn’t have 1:1. I’m in the NW and it seems to be more common to have paired or small group sessions. Ours were paired and online. Lessons were an hour and a quarter and cost £35 each. I did honestly think it sounded quite lucrative- I only charge £40 for A level and that’s 1:1!

LondonPapa · 03/11/2024 18:39

Where I am in London it is £90 for 121 sessions in 1 subject. Group lessons are £60.

Thank you. All my enquiries are for 1:1. I've tried offering small groups and paired but it seems that 1:1 and in person is what's really in demand.

Wow! Just shows how it differs from area to area.

Being fully booked with a long waiting list may be more a reflection of people being organised/planning ahead.

There's an extent to which people can only afford so much.

Im booked on with a tutor & my kids are only 5 &7. If she went mad on the prices, id have to pull out & we'd prep ourselves at home. Eldest will likely pass regardless anyway, youngest will not.

I'm increasingly not sure tutors make as much difference as people think. You can see right now from my eldests yr 3 class - 6 kids are in another league & will likely pass. 18 kids have little/no chance of passing. Theres half a dozen at best where a bloody good tutor might make a difference. The whole class will pay for tutoring. I feel bad for the parents convinced their very average kid can get in with the right tutor

I tutor GCSE and A level maths (years 9-13) 1-to-1 in London suburbs. I currently charge £40 per hour, but its been several years since my last increase, so maybe could charge a little more, and will probably increase next year. I don't do 11+ but there are grammar schools in my area, and believe the going rate is way more than that, £30-40 ph for group sessions (each), and £60-80 individual. It's crazy!

One reason for the huge price where I live is that there are only 2 grammar schools (one boys, one girls, both extremely sought after), and many parents who educate privately try to switch to these at age 11 so they can save a fortune on 7 years of school fees. Something to consider when setting a price for your area.

Chenanceau · 03/11/2024 22:43

£38ph, SouthEast (not London) - that’s for group tuition though.

LostMySocks · 03/11/2024 22:57

South East £50/hour 121. We chose this rather than group as we wanted to boost DS confidence and cover gaps rather than the hardcore group tutors who did generic exam drilling with crazy homework expectations. It's the same price we pay for music lessons (although music lessons are only 30mins.

mrstnov13 · 03/11/2024 23:02

I'm in Kent and paid £30 an hour for 1:1 tutoring.

Igavebirthtoabanana · 03/11/2024 23:03

We’re in Kent and paid £25 ph for 121. This was in 2019 and 2022.

We were lucky though to get in this lady’s books. Normally the rate for 121 is about £40 ph here.

yoshiblue · 03/11/2024 23:14

NW, we've just finished 11+ 121 tutoring at £32.50ph. I think that's very reasonable as small group sessions are £29-£32 for 1.25 hours.

40thinks · 03/11/2024 23:14

£30 ph in Midlands for 1:1 in person 11+ tutoring

cheercaptain · 03/11/2024 23:50

South East London. £35/hr 121 and £27/hr group of 6-8.

cheercaptain · 03/11/2024 23:52

To add, the £27 is a 1.5hr session

rosesinmygarden · 04/11/2024 08:21

Thanks everyone. Very helpful.

Thanks for your comment on my waiting lists. I understand how they work though. I have separate waiting lists for each year with new enquiries each week from parents wanting to start tuition immediately.

The demand in my area is insane. I could literally fill my spaces over and over if there were more hours a week I could work without it impacting my family.

My current rates are on my website very clearly, so this is obviously not putting people off. I don't believe in hiding costs and everyone pays the same.

My tutoring related expenses has risen exponentially (obviously like everyone's bills). I'm not looking to 'go mad with prices'. I'm considering trying to cover the increase in my costs so I can afford to live. A £1/2 per lesson rise would go a long way towards this, so not masses. But I'm obviously aware that many people are in the same boat re COL.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it sounds like you're well placed to do the prep yourself at home and that you aren't sure the tutor you've chosen will add value or is really worth the money. Maybe save yourself the money and resentment and tutor your child yourself?

Go for it. Tutoring is hard work and requires a lot of planning and prep. Very rewarding though when you make a difference in a child's education.

Kent, 6 in a group zoom £14.50 per 1 hr session very good value and worked a treat.

KeepinOn · 04/11/2024 19:32

I paid £40 an hour for online 1:1 tuition, the tutor was ex-head of the local grammar, knows the other grammars in the area very well, and I thought we had a bargain! He was excellent. DD passed the test but we won't find out if she got a place until March.
