Hey everyone- first time Mama here! Loving it but this week hit me with a curve ball- I posted about HFMD. Luckily we’re past the worst of it. Speaking to another mum and they said more things come up like slapped cheek and also that they can get hfmd more than once ( I was in shock) … not agaaaiinn?! This week has been the trenches.

so what other childhood diseases have u encountered that were likely spread from nursery/school.

To that one smart Alec commenter, no I’m not paranoid, I like to be informed and prepared for any possibilities.

There are lots of things, and with the best will in the world you can’t prepare for them they just happen when they happen (although Sod’s Law does dictate that it will be at the most inconvenient time going!)

if you go down the rabbit hole of trying to research everything that she may get then you do risk making yourself paranoid and anxious about things. Just deal with what happens as it happens

Chicken pox 😞

That was really the only thing I’ve been expecting bc I had it as a kid. But I’m learning so much more about childhood Illnesses. I thought teething was bad 😅😅Our babies are very strong to go through these things time and time again.

Its completely normal in early hildhood to get a lot of mild, non specific viruses. Most of these don't require any more than a bit of calpol and lots of snuggles.
This includes:

  • General fevers/malaise lasting a day or two
  • runny noses
  • coughs
  • 24 hour hour vomiting bugs
  • 24 hour diarrhoea bugs
  • ear infections
  • urine infections
  • minor/non specific viral rashes

Its normal for them to get stuff sort of once a month. By the time they get to school age they get stuff way less & cope with mild colds easily. Mine are never off school really, i can't remember the last vom bug.

I've never heard of hmfd?

Hand, foot and mouth is contagious and not pleasant.

It is really hard at the time. You have to throw all routine and rules out of the window and huckle down with them. I used to still take them out in the buggy snuggled up and lying back. This was for me to get fresh air and pass the time!

Jk987 · 03/11/2024 14:10

Haha just realised my mistake. Never seen it abbreviated before!

TickingAlongNicely · 03/11/2024 14:15

The one that caught me by surprise was Scarlet Fever. I thought that didn't exist any more.

Weve also had...
Chicken Pox
Impetigo
Molluscum Contagium
Warts/verrucas
D&V
A lung infection

Diarrhoea and vomiting. You are massively overthinking this OP. Your child will occasionally get sick, some more than others. You can’t prepare for it. Just deal with things as they come.

I had an incredibly healthy child all through primary and most of secondary school. Now aged 20 she’s a nightmare health wise! You can’t predict these things.

Thanks. No im not overthinking and I know there’s nothing I can do beyond helping them through it. I’m a curious person and that’s ok
