To not be very sympathetic to dh

DH has a bad cold. It has been going on for over a week now. There have been a lot of symptoms. He now has occasional dizziness if he stands up or moves his head awkwardly. I am pretty sure this is blocked ears/nose.
He has just: walked dramatically into the garden and straight back in leaving doors open, announced he might need to seek medical help (and then changed his mind), told me he is afraid the dizziness might be causing him permanent harm, announced he has to go to bed with something light to read, asked for an apple, asked for tea (fresh ginger please), asked what the symptoms of a stroke are.
FFS!
should I just ignore?

After I had the cold I had horrible sinus aches but he entirely ignored me the one time I mentioned it.

Sounds like it's in his sinuses. Tell him to solve the problem or shut up. Or at least try. Spay, tablets and antihistamine.

My dh is the same, thankfully he's learnt to take the damn lemsip or fuck off. He's also learnt it actually helps and I'm more sympathetic when he's trying to help himself instead of being an intolerable whinge bag of a man child.

And please don't get me wrong, I am sympathetic when he's tired or ill or just over everything. I will coddle when needed and make sure hes comfortable as i expect him to do for me.

But if someone refuses to help themselves and makes it everyone else's problem my patience wears very thin very fast.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 02/11/2024 23:11

Sympathy OP. DH and I have both had the cold that's doing the rounds - it's very sinusy and does cause some dizziness with all the blocked sinuses in the head/ears etc.

I had it for a week and no bloody bugger even noticed in my house. DH developed it last weekend and immediately took to his bed. Bloody men.

Popcorn63 · 02/11/2024 23:12

Remind him in no uncertain terms just how selfish he was when you were ill.
List everything you have been doing for him.
Point out his ridiculous refusal to so much as take a simple painkiller.
Tell him to bloody grow up!
Then ignore him.
You've run after him, sympathised, offered help and he's being petulant and immature.
Then make yourself a nice cup of tea 🙂

PeriPeriMam · 02/11/2024 23:13

Agree with him. Take him to a&e as he's probably at deaths door. Drive home as there's limited space in the waiting area.

Stupid and unhelpful comment.

Symptoms of meningitis are a rash that doesn't blanch under a glass, neck pain and stiffness, and sensitivity to light.

Saltandvinegarflavourcrisp · 02/11/2024 23:21

I did say “do you want to go to and e ?” Answer was “oh I don’t know. How can they help me?” So I asked “I have a private health insurance from when I worked in civil service I’m pretty sure there is a telephone gp service you can use” answer “oh no I don’t want that. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow”
so I went off to bed with the dog. I am very very irritated now and really not looking forward to tomorrow (when I may have to go out).

He also refuses to take any drugs that might help him instead seeking out weird old vitamins he was given about 5 years ago and never touched.

That's my hard line. All the sympathy in the world if you have taken some basic cold medicine and still feel terrible.

Saltandvinegarflavourcrisp · 02/11/2024 23:24

He has not got meningitis he really hasn’t. He has a cold which is blocking his sinuses that’s all and he’s acting like he’s at deaths door. It is extremely irritating.

All men act like their dying of something serious when they have a cold I tell my dh take tablets I give them when I'm their give drinks what's requested and say take tablets to work if you feel ill I'm loving but theirs a cold and a bloody cold no need for drama men eh

girlofsandwich · 02/11/2024 23:30

Oh god my partner is like this. The world stops when he has a cold, god forbid he takes anything over the counter. The GP is too expensive, etc. I happily let him take to the bed and bring him tea, it's never nice to feel poorly. But the dramatics while doing nothing about it is so daft 😂 I do think most of these things involve riding it out but I wish there was a Man Flu placebo to settle them at times.

Saltandvinegarflavourcrisp · 02/11/2024 23:35

Ha ha. There was a very loud sigh and he has just got up. Are you ok I asked. A very weak and feeble little voice replied “I woke up. I needed a wee” this is a 6’2” adult man not an ancient quavery little oap.

And you're offering to take him to A+E .

You're a much nicer person than me.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 03/11/2024 00:05

Good God, these men do infuriate me. I do have sympathy for my DH but also get quite impatient and sometimes say fairly unkind things along the lines of "Well, imagine being me and putting up for the past decade with a head injury/post concussion syndrome, then a permanent neurological involuntary movement disorder from an off label antipsychotic, then doing what every woman does in middle age and suffer from the menopause....:

Of course, the very mention of these health woes are not welcome, and I'm not sympathetic enough/empathetic and I need to consider him a lot more than I do, especially while he's been looking after me/our DC/working etc
I am sympathetic, of course I am. I do show love, care and affection if he's ill. But I think occasionally I'd have liked to see him go through what I do on a daily basis, and then be grateful to have "just" an occasional cold. I'm not asking for a medal from him at all, but I think it is hard to compare certain different health conditions which are acute/chronic.

mumda · 03/11/2024 00:22

Ask him what he thinks would help.

@Saltandvinegarflavourcrisp offer him sex!! that usually results in sudden improvement of health!! 😄

Edited

🤣🤣🤣🤣

DressDilemma · 03/11/2024 14:58

Looks like he may have sinusitis and might need antibiotics. It can be quite unpleasant, especially if it’s a severe infection. It would be best for him to call the GP tomorrow and get it checked out.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 03/11/2024 15:05

Ffs, he's utterly ridiculous - he wants you flapping around him and waiting on him, but I wouldn't be dancing attendance one iota after how he treated you when you were ill. (My dh goes annoyingly the other way (too stoic) - I myself am not stoic but prefer to be left to get on with it).

If he's concerned, there are doctors available. If he's not concerned enough to see one, he can't be that concerned.

user1471556818 · 03/11/2024 15:09

It's threads like these that make me grateful that my dh behaves like an adult when he is unwell .
Mind I'm a nurse so seriously lacking in sympathy for minor stuff

Seriously79 · 03/11/2024 15:26

Play him at his own game, be really worried and concerned. Fuss around him loads and tell him you've called 111. They were also worried and a paramedic is en route.

I'm pretty sure he will perk up quickly!

Gymnopedie · 03/11/2024 16:09

It would be best for him to call the GP tomorrow and get it checked out.

True. But he's a grown man who can make his own decsions. If he won't then he has to live with the consequences, not make it OP's problem.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 03/11/2024 16:32

Ugghh Men. Another nurse here, I am sympathetic to a point but I can also recognise when someone is genuinely unwell. I know colds and sinus issues are horrible and make you feel dreadful but OMG take some paracetamol.

HelpMeGetThrough · 03/11/2024 17:22
  • asked what the symptoms of a stroke are. FFS! should I just ignore?*

For a start, not walking around in the garden, wanting ginger tea and having a "light read" whilst chomping on. Granny Smith.

Malingering old git.

I only had a mini one and didn't know what day of the week it was.

Jessie1259 · 03/11/2024 17:37

I was like this when i tested positive for covid, I went on to have horrible headaches. My OH had a slight cold in comparison and was pretty much fine. Maybe it's reversed in your house?
