Taking eldest DD to London late November to watch her first West end show. She's picked MJ the musical. Looking at tickets now. Admittedly I haven't been to London for seven years or so but the prices????? I'm so upset, was setting aside £65/£75 each for a ticket. Baring in mind DD is a shorter than average ten so need decent-ish seats. There's nothing under £115 and even they are restricted right in the back grand circle. Most expensive seats in the house are £270 each! To put it into context I spent £300 last Easter on a hen do to majorca for a weekend. I just don't know how I can justify all that money for a two hour show. Can any helpful mumsnetters advise me on the best seats for a child in the Prince edward theatre pretty please?

Search for the theatre monkey website which will give you a re view of each seat. It will also list any offers.

TeenLifeMum · 02/11/2024 20:57

Yep, people complained about Taylor Swift but I paid £96 each for those. The ABBA voyage tickets were more like £144. You can get cheaper for longer running shows but costs of running theatres and paying actors have gone up in the last 5 years so it does make sense. Means we go less though.

AmberAnt · 02/11/2024 20:59

Hi OP, when are you going and where are you looking at ticket prices? I just looked on the ticket site and could see available Saturday tix for about £70 and weekday evenings from £30

AmberAnt · 02/11/2024 21:00

For the Saturday matinee on November 30th there are two for £70 each but will be cheaper in the week: https://london.mjthemusical.com/tickets/#/seats/282637688?select=best

As a pp said TodayTix is also could sometimes for offers

Have you tried booking via todaytix.com? I can see max £67 tickets for the whole of Nov (though haven't checked if they actually exist when you click through...)

Gardendiary · 02/11/2024 21:01

I don’t know if this is still an option, but I always used to get last minute tickets to whatever had space, matinees always seemed to be cheaper and emptier, obviously this is no good if you want to see something specific, but could be money saving.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 02/11/2024 21:01

There's an app called today tix if you can hold your nerve, I think the problem is lots of people like to do theatre in the run up to Christmas and you've left it fairly late.

Girasole02 · 02/11/2024 21:01

Try Central Tickets or ShowFilmFirst.

Singleandproud · 02/11/2024 21:03

Look at View from My Seat I got a ticket to Book of Mormon because it had a restricted view £25 and the seats around me were £95. Checked on there and the view was near perfect and the bar didn't interfere with anything.

Even if you have to go high, just bring a £1 for the opera glasses / little binoculars or take your own and youll see everything.

I once paid ££££ for RowB stalls tickets to Lion King, some tall bloke sat Infront of DD just as it started and she couldn't see anything in the first half, no guarantee of a good view even if you have paid £££.

Yes I've just hbeen looking for November on TodayTix and most of the cheap seats seem to be gone.

Going to book for spring instead.

Itisjustmyopinion · 02/11/2024 21:03

I got a decent priced ticket during London Theatre Week but was still up in the Grand Circle. Honestly OP I was very underwhelmed. I thought it would be a bigger spectacle than it was. That’s just my opinion though, you can go to the Theatreboard website and have a read through the reviews and see what you think if you want to get opinions before you commit to tickets

You could risk it and get on the day tickets but if she has her heart set on it you may not want to risk it.

If you can hold off and keep an eye out for kids week, you usually get good offers. I can’t remember when it is but you can search for when it was this year as it’s usually around the same time

Dollshousedolly · 02/11/2024 21:08

Possibly you’ve missed out on the less expensive seats because you’ve left it late enough to be booking for the end of this month ?

WhitegreeNcandle · 02/11/2024 21:09

We’ve been to see Mrs Doubtfire today. Saturday matinee in half term and there were empty seats. Very few children in the audience too. It was £95 a ticket though so best part of £200 for DD and I. Good seats but not even in the stalls. That was without drinks, travel to London or accommodation. We paid it as we really wanted that specific show but blimey o Reilly it was expensive. I’m sure that why there were v few kids in the audience.

Just about worth it.

our best value one once was getting walk in tickets to Only fools and horses for £10 each. Surprisingly good show.

Pjsallday · 02/11/2024 21:09

I've been looking on the prince Edwards own site, love theatre, London theatre tickets. Its a birthday treat and she's a December baby! Your right about people wanting to go for the whole Christmas experience my DD wants to look at all the lights etc. We live near Birmingham so also factoring in a nights stay but plan to try and get a budget hotel as we will only be sleeping there. I think if it was only the hubby and myself I wouldn't be too fussed about seats but as its first experience I do want a semi decent seat!

Pjsallday · 02/11/2024 21:11

Also has to be a Saturday night, school and work means we can't go mid week, which would be soooo much cheaper

SuperBored · 02/11/2024 21:17

If DD is short you might benefit from the cheaper tickets that they sometimes have at the side that have restricted legroom...although I think prince Edward theatre is where I saw Mary Poppins and was literally in the back row and still really enjoyed it, I do take binoculars if at the back though for when I want to see particular bits. I usually book cheap seats as I would rather see more shows than less in better seats, I have sat in different places and it does differ but not enough for me to want to spend some of the prices!

AMonkeysUncle · 02/11/2024 21:21

Don’t watch that one. He was a paedophile and his awful family are making money out of it. If you’re paying that much, try Matilda, Lion King, Six or Mamma Mia (age dependant). Many of the lesser musicals will tour anyway.

Pjsallday · 02/11/2024 21:23

I totally left it too late, I had major car repairs which wiped me out this month. I should have booked ages ago and stuck it on the credit card. Lesson well and truly learnt. I may well ask her to perhaps hold off until the new year, it will be something to look forward to in dreary January

I paid £75 for theatre a decade ago, of course it’s gone up to £100ish. It’s a massive treat

The theatres I've been to seem to have small cushion things for kids to sit on - you just need to ask them.

Matilda is brilliant btw.

AmberAnt · 02/11/2024 21:25

There are pairs of tickets available for the 7.30pm performance on Saturday November 30th for £72 in the stalls or £62 in the grand circle….both would be within your budget. Personally I’d go for the stalls but you could check views on Seatplan.

You can book tickets for those prices here on the official website: https://london.mjthemusical.com/tickets/#/seats/282637616?select=best

Could you give them as a Christmas present? Not necessarily buy them yet and hold off until the new year (sometimes there are January sales)

You can get a “ticket” made up to give her as a gift. She won’t know that you haven’t bought them yet. Look on Etsy for people that make pretend tickets as gifts. I have both given these and received them and it’s nicer than a print out of the ticket

How old is she? Mean girls isn’t as pricey as that as the theatre is small so all seats are good.
clueless is coming out soon too.

Most closed down after lockdown but think it’s mostly because people use apps now like Today Tix. There is however still the TKTS booth in Leicester Square outside the Odeon and recently opened Today Tix booth in Leicester Square tube station
