Are we too old for nightclubs?

Meeting up with uni friends soon in Birmingham. None of us know the city very well but it works out as a good central location to meet.

We're almost 40 but want to go to a night club- are there any in central Birmingham that won't make us feel ancient? I haven't set foot in a night club in over 10 years so I'm certain I'll stick out like a sore thumb!

Also what does one even wear to a club in 2024?!

AIBU to think there must be somewhere in Birmingham that suits us- more into rock/retro type songs than newer stuff, although maybe the sort of music we danced to back at uni is what is considered retro nowadays...

Christ, I feel like I was too old for nightclubs at 18! Only reason I ever ventured into one was to meet girls, don't think I've set foot in one since I met DP at age 24!

But no, if you feel like going to a club, then you're not too old to go to a club. I'd recommend comfy shoes though, I spent far too much time dancing at a wedding a few months back and my feet and knees were fucked for a good week afterwards!

Russell19 · 02/11/2024 11:01

Are nightclubs even a thing anymore? 🤣

YouAreOne · 02/11/2024 11:04

I remember Chicagos as a student back in the late 90s, there'd always be some 50 ish women on the dance floor trying to dance with the lads 😂 Loved them.

No, you're not too old.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 02/11/2024 11:09

Go! Whenever I’m in the club, I always see people having fun that are in their early 40s. My mum is 46 and still goes to the club with her friends sometimes😂

Doggymummar · 02/11/2024 11:09

Anyone over 25 is too old I think you'll find, if they even still exist.

mymumwouldntapprove · 02/11/2024 11:10

I was bemoaning the lack of any decent places to go ‘out out’ with my 40-ish friends only last night.
we used to love clubs, going dancing, getting dressed up was part of the fun. Now the young people want to be home by midnight and when they do go out, they just wear their casual clothes.

Portabella · 02/11/2024 11:11

We're off to day fever today. A day club for over 30's. See if you can find one and enjoy!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 02/11/2024 11:11

Popworld is usually a laugh

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 02/11/2024 11:12

If you want to go to a nightclub, go to a nightclub. Who cares what people think?

Life is too short.

I'm in my 40's and still enjoy a night out drinking and dancing.

BetterInColour · 02/11/2024 11:12

You are in your late thirties, no better time to get on the dance-floor and have some fun! I would look for 90's or 2000's club nights, whichever is your era from uni so you can have a nostalgic vibe. I don't go to any any more myself, I would if a friend would go with me, because I loved dancing and it kept me so fit, so at the moment it's just kitchen disco, but I'm looking out for retro nights near where I live.

NameChangedAgainn · 02/11/2024 11:14

You're definitely not too old for night clubs! I have friends in their forties who still come clubbing, and there's usually a wide range of ages in the places we go.
I can't help with recommendations for Birmingham but sure you'll find something.
What to wear - we tend to get dressed up in dresses /skirts and crop tops, with heels usually. But there are always some more casually dressed people and trainers or flat boots are accepted /quite common in night clubs these days.

theluckiest · 02/11/2024 11:17

Snobs nightclub is your best bet here!! Definitely a retro 90s, indie, alternative vibe.

I went with some other 40-somethings a while ago. Yes, we were probably older than most of the crowd's mums but as it's a 90s vibe, we knew all of the songs and no-one gave a shit anyway.

Enjoy!!!

What nonsense. I am 50 and last went to a club - well more of a late bar with dancing but one that only opens for that purpose - a few weeks ago and had a brilliant night. My friends and I, as always, ended up dancing chatting with loads of different people because we are just there for the music and dancing and are no way self conscious or looking for guys or any of that. I danced for 4 hours solid that night (in trainers!) and was buzzing for days after. Even if there were people there who thought us odd or pathetic, literally who cares? Anyone who gets to my age shouldn't anyway.

BetterInColour · 02/11/2024 11:18

I have just seen the ads for Day Fever and it looks brilliant! Who knew that the amazing actress Vicky McClure had a different side to her. There's not one near where I live (yet).

rewilded · 02/11/2024 11:18

Ronnie Scotts was perfect for this but sadly no more. Sad

theluckiest · 02/11/2024 11:21

Oh and according to my 18 year old DC, the 90s / 2000s is definitely in so you'll be fine. At an 18th party the other week, the kids knew all that stuff: Nirvana, Killers, etc. Get your chunky boots on (heels are definitely out) and you'll be the coolest in there..
😊

This!

This is such a MN thing "am I too old for X, Y and Z".

You can't be "too old" to do anything you enjoy/want to do. You're too old when you're dead.

MildGreenDairyLiquid · 02/11/2024 11:25

Definitely not too old, although I understand your desire to go somewhere with perhaps a slightly older crowd than somewhere full of kids. If it was Manchester I’d have some recommendations, sadly I don’t know Birmingham particularly well.

Exactly, you proved my point for me. I'm 55 and live in Brighton we go to gigs and dance. Theme nights to dance, silent discos, raves pubs with DJs, gay bars for the drag but not clubs. Let the kids have somewhere to themselves

Thepeopleversuswork · 02/11/2024 12:27

God what is it with people being “too old” for everything. Who cares?

I’m in my 50s and I still (occasionally) go to nightclubs.

Go if you want, don’t if you don’t but why on earth should someone else’s opinion of whether you fit some narrow minded definition of the correct age range be the defining factor?

So odd. When we were “the kids” there were people older than us at clubs after work or for celebrations etc. As long as you’re not a creepy man on your own standing surveying you’re fine. No idea why you think this is a “kids” only space and what age they are no longer “kids”. It’s not soft play.

I would just do research into ones that had music I liked which is also what I would do back in the day. But I’m more likely to be in a B@1 myself…

Keroppi · 02/11/2024 12:43

Snobs definitely for a nightclub. They even do 'supper club' a day disco for over 30s lol

My other fav nightclub is Nightingales gay bar, really great vibe and mix of ages, great music
Gingers is nice, cocktail bar.

Other fun places (may be closed as is been years since lived in brum):
Chance and counters board game bar w food
Metros - club
The vaults
Digbeth dining club
1000 Trades
Subside - rocky/alternative club
