Should I book a GP appointment for DD?

DD is 8 months. She has just thrown up very severely whilst fast asleep (the whole contents of her stomach). Two nights ago the same thing happened, she was face down in a pool of vomit - luckily I was there to help her. For context this isn't a little bit of sick it soaked through the bedsheets, mattress protector and through to the other side of the deep mattress. After the first vomiting episode she threw up (projectile) three or four times during the day. I had initially put it down to a tummy bug.

Yesterday she was so happy, giggling and smiling, completely well in herself so tonight was out of the blue.

Last month we had an A&E visit because she choked on her sleep in the night and briefly lost consciousness. She was fine by the time we got to the hospital (paramedics were incredible) but it was one of the scariest nights of my life which is why I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable and overreacting.

I think this is happening from her straining to have a poop (both times have been followed by a very full nappy 20 mins later). It's the quantity that's worrying me. She's asleep again now. We are on the sofa and I'm trying to stay awake!

To summarise- she is absolutely fine in herself, no other symptoms apart from being very gassy and projectile vomit episodes (looks like churned milk, not throwing up food she has eaten).

YABU - this is normal. Baby's are sick all the time. Enjoy your cuddles and stop worrying

YANBU - this doesn't sound normal. You should book a GP appointment

Didn't want to read and run. That sounds awful for you and your little one but atleast she seems fine in herself.
Have you added any new foods or changed anything in their diet recently? My DD1 when we first introduced whole milk as an evening bottle instead of formula she would throw up violently a few hours later and it would only be the milk.
I'd be inclined to book a drs appointment / trust your mum gut - but equally, as drs do, I'd be prepared to be told they're absolutely fine and to just monitor the situation!
Hope you both manage to get some sleep! ❤️

Thank you! She has always been a very sicky baby. I had to cut out dairy at first as she was reacting to it in breast milk. Gradually started to introduce dairy again at 5 months and she has seemed to have coped well. Shes eating fine and hasn't thrown up any food - it's only ever churned milk and usually in the early hours. (It's happened at the same time in the night)

The doctors at the hospital put it down to a tummy bug (her vitals were all fine and she bounced back very quickly). I really don't think that was the case. I'm thinking it is more like reflux.

I would actually say she was in a better mood than usual yesterday! I'm not worried about her being ill. Its the not knowing if she is going to be sick or not that's getting to me. I don't feel like I can relax as it has happened a few times with no warning.

I was going to say I'd put money on it being because of reflux. Absolutely no harm in a GP appointment. If she's happy etc when she's awake then that is good. Just a heads up if they think it's reflux and they put her on gaviscon it makes them horrendously constipated. My baby went from going multiple times a day to not going for 10 days due to gaviscon so now I give a little lactulose if he needs to have it.

She's tiny still. If you're worried you should get her checked. ☺️

Oh no! I hope they don't prescribe gaviscon - Her poo schedule is like clockwork at the moment 😭 (it's about the only thing I can confidently predict!).

You say that but I can't believe how much she has grown! I swear she grew 3 inches overnight 😉

You can avoid the constipation with gaviscon by not giving the full dose. Both of my DDs have had it for awful reflux. We give a half dose and it's enough to calm the vomiting whilst not getting them constipated. DD2 has a very reliable poop schedule 😅 - she's seven months and although she should be on 2 sachets a feed, we just give the 1 and it works quite well. Gaviscon is the first line for reflux so you will almost certainly be asked to try it first before they move onto other things like omeprazole. We were not able to get that without a paediatrician review.

From a quick Google search (I'm not medically trained) as I understand it there is a difference between reflux and vomiting. With DD it is definitely forceful vomiting, I can hear her wretching and feel all her muscles contracting. I'm assuming this doesn't happen with reflux?

It sounds like reflux. You can get a Matress wedge which might help. Our son had gaviscon and rinitidine for reflux plus I cut out dairy and soya.

That doesn’t sound like reflux to me. I had an EXTREMELY refluxy baby and I don’t think they’d have ever soaked through an entire mattress. The retching wouldn’t really fit either. Given that she was sick a couple of days ago my bet would still be tummy bug. These can last a while in kids (I recently had my 3 year old be sick on and off for five days but be otherwise fine in himself…!) which surprised me.

Personally I’d give it a few more days, but given how difficult it is to book a gp appointment it might be wise to book one anyway! You can always cancel it if she’s better. Hope you get some sleep and she feels better soon!
