Supermarket lighting.

Hi, just wondering if anyone else feels a bit dizzy when in big supermarkets with bright lightening. I had a funny turn about 18 months ago in a major supermarket. I was taken to A&E by ambulance but was discharged being told it was just one of those things or a virus.
Today I was at a self service till and started to feel very shaky. I ended up leaving half my shopping and leaving the shop. Once in the fresh air I felt completely fine. Has anyone else felt like this? I know this is a health issue but thought I would post here for traffic. AIBU to think I should just stick to small local shops and not brave big shops again but ask my DH to do weekly shops instead? He would have no problem with this as he is great but I feel a bit guilty as I work shorter hours.

I used to get really faint and dizzy in big supermarkets whilst pregnant. Only in the ones where the lighting was very bright.

Most of the time I avoid supermarkets because I find the lights, (and music, displays etc) too overwhelming in a sensory way. I’m ND.

Not in supermarkets, but I find the lighting in Smiggle awful and I hate going in there (luckily DD has largely grown out of their stuff now).

I always describe smiggle as a visual representation of a migraine.

Rather than sending dh, just shop online.

@IspiniI had a funny turn at a similar time with similar circumstances. I have this too in certain shops and would love to know what it is. I now get B12 injections as that was rock bottom.

Yep, that's why I wear wide brim hats when I go shopping. Sunglasses too sometimes. Don't care if I look like an idiot. It helps.

Unfortunately our waitrose is getting a makeover and the first thing I noticed was awful lighting... The new bright led.

ElaborateCushion · 01/11/2024 17:02

I get migraines if I am exposed to flickering fluorescent lights, so I can well imagine it.

I was in Waitrose recently when they put their lights onto half lighting (they do it as a cost saving measure apparently for a couple of hours during the week) and I have to say it was quite a pleasant experience - not so in your face!

Google Flicker Vertigo / Bucha effect.

So glad this isn’t just me.

Our Sainsburys recently was refurbished and it's horrible now. There's lights everywhere. Lights around the toiletries, lights around the freezers, lights around the fruit and veg and so on.

Why do we need LED strip lights around all the shelves?

BrioNotBiro · 01/11/2024 19:59

I get a disproportionate number of migraines in supermarkets - not all the time luckily. I think it's the lighting compounded by its glare off the glass cabinets.

Makingchocolatecake · 01/11/2024 23:37

Get some sunglasses :)

Online shopping?

This is interesting, I get giddy/dizzy in some shops. Almost feels like the floor is moving.

I don't in Aldi, and until now I didn't know why I'd stopped shopping at the big supermarket but it is because of this dizzy feeling.

skyandocean · 02/11/2024 00:04

I have this experience in primark, I've never been able to go in during pregnancy as it would make me so dizzy light headed like I'm about to faint
