Neighbours cat is an absolute sweetheart. He visits me most days and yet today, I am conscious that it is both Halloween and Diwali so sent him on his way an hour ago by locking up the shed early.(He likes to chill out in there of an evening). Only because I don't want him out when the fireworks are in full throttle (He is absolutely terrified of them and is an older cat) . I'm now worried he is out in the garden still too terrified to go home. Please tell me I did the right thing and that he will go home? I know this all sounds a bit pathetic but I'm extremely fond of him and did what I felt was right.

I'd open the shed again for him so he can hide away if he wants to.

Pop out and call him and see if he’s there? Or go to his house to check, at least that will settle your mind.
If his owners haven’t made sure he’s inside in time to avoid any fireworks then they can’t be too worried about him.

Edit: that sounds like I meant they don’t care about him but I meant you may be worrying needlessly if they haven’t had the urgency to get him home before dark as I’m sure they’ll know that what’s best for him.

Definitely open the shed. If his owners haven’t cared enough to keep him inside tonight, at least he’ll have somewhere safe to camp out for the night if your shed is open. Not your responsibility of course but you sound like a very kind person who would step in for the cat

You sound so lovely! 😊
Maybe pop round to your neighbour and check he made it home ok, I’m sure they’ll be grateful that you’ve been so considerate.
