Just that really.

The other day I explained to my 11 year old niece that when I was at junior school we used to have a small bottle of milk with a straw every morning, and she looked at me like I’d lost my mind.

I talked to a group of Year 7 students (age 11) about the paper round I did as a teen. None of them knew what it was!

My 13 year old has a paper round! They are still around.

As a student nurse in 70s/80s
Smoking allowed on wards (all bedside lockers had ashtrays)
The portable phone was a rotary dial/pay phone on a trolley, one per ward and plugged in next to bed on request.
One TV (black and white) per Nightingale ward and all patients had to watch the same channel (choice of 3)

You had to pay for things with cash.

If you had a cheque book you were considered quite posh.

If we were short of cash on Saturday or because it was almost pay day we would go to M and S, pay by cheque then return it for a cash refund! As the cheque would have taken a few days to clear we were back in funds by the time it went through out account.

Slam-door trains, where to open the door from inside, you had to reach through the window and use the outside handle. These trains were still in use near Southampton in 2001.

These were still in use on the Norwich to London line until around 2020. It was a proper blast from the past. The seats on the old rolling stock were much comfier than the current ones.

generally the phrase "pre internet" gets weird looks from younger colleagues.

ditto
Pre spreadsheet
Pre mobile phone

alittlebitonthego · 31/10/2024 22:19

Drive in movies, where you either tuned in on your radio or attached a speaker to your (rolled down) side window.
Marble season!

The student grant was enough to cover accommodation and living costs. It was quite substantial in the 80s and 90s until it was scrapped in 1997.

It gave my generation much more social mobility than previous generations, by giving us access to higher education.

In 1967 I received a grant, based on my parents' income but everything else was paid for, tuition, accommodation and all meals. I feel so sorry for students these days and wonder when going to University will stop being seen as an automatic thing, many courses are meaningless, we need to go back to apprenticeships and/or 'sandwich' courses where you go to College a 2 or 3 days a week and work for a company the rest, receiving a wage.

TheShellBeach · 31/10/2024 22:22

Cars didn't have radios, tape decks, CD players or any kind of music system back in the day.

My dad died in 1973 and the car he'd driven had nothing like that (it was a Cortina).

Home cooked chips were not frozen chips cooked in the oven, they were made from spuds cut up at home (peeled first of course) then fried in a chip pan full of lard, which was left to set after use and used again and again until it went manky. The first batch of chips after the lard was changed were always the most delicious. Don't know if you can even buy a chip pan these days

You can.
I remember our chip pan when we were children. Full of solid fat! So unhealthy.

But so tasty.

When the National Anthem played before the tv programmes ended at night, there were still older people who stand up and salute the tv while it played.

It was also played at the end of a film and we used to almost climb over each other to get out before it started.

No evening parties at weddings, and instead after the reception you saw bride and groom off on their honeymoon. Bride changed into a special Going Away Outfit.

Wedding ceremonies only in churches or register offices, no hotels or stately homes. Parents of bride hosted and paid for the reception, sent out all the invitations, and invited all their own friends.

yes, that is pretty much how my wedding was.

I used to walk my geography teacher’s dog, along with my own, after school. Some days she would come with me and we would go up to the woods in her car and walk them there.

um … that actually was a bit weird?

As a child I used to get super excited when the autumn/winter catalogue came in, I'd go through the toy section and write my Christmas list. My poor parents 😂

Argos catalogues our 6 year old went very quiet about her Father Christmas list eventually she presented us with her list to send off, it was all from Argos and had
name of the toy
page number
catalogue code
price.

We were very impressed!

And you had to go to the bank before it closed on Friday if you wanted cash for the weekend. No atms.

I can remember when we had to wait TEN YEARS for a film to be shown on TV after it had been on at the cinema! But then,I am quite old (61)!

You most certainly are not old! We are vintage, like red wine.

I started boarding school in 1986, when corporal punishment was illegal in state schools but still legal in private schools.

It didn't affect my life one iota - no one was belting public school girls in the 80s, and my whole life was run by a set of rules that didn't apply to most kids anyway. But it's bizarre that it was ever legal for unrelated adults to hit some kids but not others, based purely on where their parents chose to send them to school.

Yes, bizarre indeed.

Two of the schools I taught in during the 70s and 80s were private schools and the thought of corporal punishment would never have crossed anyone’s mind. Perhaps it was more likely in a boys school?

@TheShellBeach

We usually got house calls in the 1960s, when I was a child

This seems like a real luxury - some people are lucky to get an appointment the same week nowadays! My in laws still call GP for a home visit. I don't think they realise things have changed now. It's sad that the days of GP home visits are over.

It must depend where you live. I'm in Lancashire, our GP's definitely still do home visits and not just for the elderly. Our lovely doctor came out to see me last summer when my back went. My parents lived in rural Cumbria and the GP's up there still do house calls also.

Loving this thread. So many memories.

I have just remembered that when the Falklands War started, our boss went out and bought a radio so we could keep up with the news in the office.

My DC who have never not known mobile phones or computers think that is very weird.

On of our Regiments had sent men down to the Falklands and we knew they were almost there. The creepy man who gave updates on TV announced on Friday that a ship had been hit with severe casualties but it wasn't until the Monday or Tuesday that the news reached us that it wasn't the ship carrying 'our' men. Obvious relief was tempered with sadness for the many lives lost and their families.

I didn't have a computer or access to one until my final year! Had to hand write essays after finding papers on a primitive cd rom of medline and then having to search for the current bound set of volumes of the journals on the library shelves.....then either spending hours reading the paper in the bound volume or photocopying for an entire afternoon.....

Oh and no reference Management software.....

We worked hard for our degrees!

In the 60s I started to train to be a computer programmer on machines that now fill the top floor of the Science Museum, or they did a few years ago. Those colossal things had less power than a Fitbit now

Loads of gummy bears for me 2 for 1p and those yummy icy cups😋. Wasn't fussed on the chocolate fish and chips or chocolate tools though.
