Just that really.

The other day I explained to my 11 year old niece that when I was at junior school we used to have a small bottle of milk with a straw every morning, and she looked at me like I’d lost my mind.

An Aga. They are not obsolete at all.

No indeed . They are very expensive and highly desirable!

PassCaring · 31/10/2024 08:43

Screen savers on PC monitor. Now they just auto turn off.
At work having your own allocated desk with set of drawers for favourite stapler. Bliss. None of that hot desking nonsense.

BT phonecard where as a student I dialled a long number before the phone number and it got billed to my parents. Suspect it was pretty pricey.

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 31/10/2024 08:44

I remember when ebay first started and we used to send a cheque for an item and wait for it to clear before it was posted out.

That we had a black and white TV.

and often used a metal coat hanger as an aerial

Who remembers this sound?

Unplug the landline, plug in your tower unit, dial up and head off to make a cup of tea. Few minutes later, if you were lucky, the world was at your fingertips in a way it had never been before! 🤣

Buying Smash Hits magazine so I’d know the lyrics to the newest songs

Omg 😂 yes!! And top of the pops mag. I was always gutted if they featured the same song as smash hits

There's also texting a number to buy "wallpaper" for your phone display or a new ringtone from the back of magazines

No cash machines or cash back.

Being handed the material for summer dresses at school. Your mother could chose the pattern. This was in 1971!

When shops, M&S in particular, had one sweater or top on display and the rest were folded in plastic wrapping and stored on the counters. All bras came in cardboard boxes!

My M&S bras still come in boxes!

That we had no fridge or TV when I was a young child.
We got a TV when I was 6, it was enormous. It was second hand and caught fire shortly afterwards when valves overheated.
We didn't have a fridge until I was 12, my mother bought it from a catalogue on instalments. We had a meat safe outdoors made of gauze to keep the flies out - seems unbelievable now. This was the 1960s.
Another one, there was no primary school uniform, we just wore our own clothes. Our secondary uniform included hats, a velour one for winter and a straw one for summer.

I remember that too, the last smoking flight I was on was 1988 which blows my mind!

I flew to California in 1995 and was put at the back, in the smoking section. There were loads of free seats, but they wouldn't let me move. All the smokers came back to fumigate us, including a couple of men with pipes. Koff koff!

Early 1990s, my friend signed us into the university where he worked, so he could show me what an email was

He offered to let me send an email from his computer, but I didn't know anyone else who had an email address, so no one to send an email to

Our landline socket was downstairs. The computer was upstairs. To get on the net was a right faff of unrolling the really long cable, etc. needless to say, Mr Gaul and I didn't surf terribly often...

Being begrudgingly allowed to watch TOTP once a week as it was the only tangible connection to youth culture that existed at the time.

I was a night owl in my teens and would spend hours tweaking reception on my radio to tune into Radio Luxembourg, played very quietly to break the oppressive teen angst ridden silence as it was the only source of music in the wee small hours.

The pearl clutching furore over the conception of Channel 4 and the imminent corruption it would unleash on impressionable minds.

Was just thinking about this one tonight. These days, you have thousands of films at your fingertips on Netflix/Prime etc. If you start watching one and it’s rubbish, you just find something else.

We used to have to go to the VIDEO SHOP, eg Blockbuster, and peruse the shelves for a video to hire (for about £4 if I remember correctly which wasn’t cheap!). No online reviews or anything to aid our choices. In my case that also involved driving 12 miles to the video shop. Whilst there you could also buy some overpriced snacks. And if the film turned out to be rubbish, tough bananas. Then the next day you had to drive back to the video shop to take it back. Mind boggling nowadays.

I worked in a video shop for 12 years when they were at the height of their popularity, absolutely loved it .

The shop was always packed , our videos weren't as expensive as Blockbuster , £1.50 for one and £1 for each additional one .

To my shame , I still remember nearly all the numbers of the videos , eg Ghostbusters was 1832 😅

Chokes and ashtrays in cars.
And being told never to touch the cigarette lighter.

Yea the choke

I also remember smoking carriages on trains. They were so horrible that even smokers didn't want to sit in them for the whole journey. So they'd just go in them when they were actually smoking and sit elsewhere the rest of the time.

ASOS started as an online company selling stuff you saw in TV shows or movies. As Seen On Screen.

I remember buying a replica keyring from Kill Bill when it came out.

Yes I remember that

I’ve been teaching 25+ years and the kids have had milk with straws (free in reception but you can still have it if you pay in primary). all this time. Only difference is it’s in a carton.

I talked to a group of Year 7 students (age 11) about the paper round I did as a teen. None of them knew what it was!

? I see kids doing paper rounds now! I was driving behind a kid with a newspaper sack on a bike this very morning!

Yes, I was thinking about this the other day and remember being disappointed that sometimes the song I wanted wasn't in it.

The hell of hearing the ( landline) phone ring as you put your key in the front door, but not getting inside in time to pick up the phone. No 1471, so you’d no idea who you’d missed.

Licensing laws. No children allowed in pubs (maybe if the pub didn’t serve food? as was common) Had many packets of crisps for a chilly ‘lunch’ outside the pub on days out in the Yorkshire dales.

The utter deadness of Sundays, with almost no shops or attractions open - don’t miss those.

2 morning post deliveries and an afternoon delivery.

MorrisZapp · 31/10/2024 09:03

I'm a mere 53 but when I was in primary school in Edinburgh the milk was delivered by a horse drawn cart. We were allowed to pat the horse if we queued nicely and were gentle.

When I went to university, I didn’t have tuition fees or accommodation costs and actually got given money by the state!

I still can't believe this happened, and am very, very, very, grateful that it did! I feel so sorry for students and their families nowadays.
Also, ringing the speaking clock (Tim) to find out the time because I didn't have a watch.
Getting a platform ticket to go and see someone off on a train.
Machines which sold Poppets on said station platforms.
Going into a booth to make a record.
