All I've seen do far, from reading threads on here and watching CNN, is doom and gloom.

So what should Labour have done to swerve the hate? What would have been an acceptable way of raising money to help fund health, social care and education?

Genuine answers, please.

Oh come now. Rachel Reeves couldn't be more sneery talking about private jets to California. The Labour Party oozes disdain for those who have done well for themselves and have wealth. It's revolting. And people know it. They can't hide it.

A specific dig at Sunak. Not at rich people. Do you honestly think it’s unfair to tax people who can afford a private jet a bit more?

Also not making severe alcohol or drug addiction an automatic qualifier for PIP. I work with two people who trained as PIP assessors but left the job because it was so unfair on people who needed it and abused by people who put a lot of effort into cheating the system

You will pleased to hear that neither drug or alcohol addiction is an automatic qualifier for PiP.

Not necessarily a lie. Changed circumstances need changed actions. It’s not ideal, granted. But 85% of farms will be unaffected.

Untrue. The smallest farms are about £2 million as anyone with the smallest knowledge of farming knows. Unfortunately the relevant minister (who has no experience of farming) has skewed figures and has included the figures for the sale of individual fields. So this destructive policy which will lead to misery for farmers is based on the usual Labour utter spite and incompetence.

@cardibach if you think many Labour people don't despise the rich, you clearly don't follow politics very closely!

The sneering on MN from people at the thought of the rich having to abruptly withdraw their kids from private school has DELIGHTED some posters, which had told me everything I need to know about many people

Nobody. Despises. The Rich.
I’m on the left of the Labour Party. I don’t despise rich people. I just think they should pay more towards society.

It’s definitely true. Why should farms be treated differently from other family businesses anyway? They get 10years to pay any IHT as it is.

Brananan · 01/11/2024 18:45

They knew it was coming and that it had to be done. You say it was 2 days ago but there was no surprises and people have been whinging since they got in in July

I'm sorry, but last year the then shadow minister told farmers there were no plans to add IHT to farms. That was a bare faced lie, clearly

Yes. A bunch of complete liars. I feared the IHT bombshell and I was right. They were elected because most people were fed up with the Tories. I hoped they would be dull but stable. Instead they are supremely arrogant and untrustworthy.

Which shows how unequal society is. Would paying 35% leave them anything other than completely free to enjoy a very luxurious lifestyle? Would they be any better off elsewhere in the world? (Except maybe USA which is too unregulated).

Greater funding and a kick up the arse to the CMS. Would be a great step towards lifting lots of children out of poverty.

This!
I have a friend with an alcoholic son. He has turned up to job interviews stinking of booze with vomit down his suit. He is not even considered unfit to work, let alone be on PIP.

Nordione1 · 01/11/2024 19:03

To your post about farming @cardibach I'm sorry. It just upsets me to read the coldhearted ignorance about this.

Farmland is about £10,000 to £15,000/ acre. The smallest farm to be able to be classed as a farm is 300 acres. The value of the farmhouse is then added onto that as farmers need to live near their animals.

The point of 100% APR is to ensure continuity. The bank in a bad year might need to loan farmers significant sums in order to run their business (buy seed etc) as they are often cash poor. They borrow against the value of their land. If each generation they need to find 20% of the value of their farm they will usually need to sell land. A bank won't lend against an asset that will decrease each generation. It's a huge and devastating blow to farming and one that all right thinking people are appalled by. (Unless they don't care about food security and are happy for hedge funds to own the land)

Society is not equal. We aren't communists.

Anyway I thought you socialists were supremely relaxed about people being filthy rich??

I’m not talking about equality. I’m talking about some sort of fairness or equity.
And what I said was I don’t hate rich people. Not the same as thinking the level of current inequality is cool.

Can you explain the ignorance. Maybe it’ll educate me. I’m basing this comment on a fair bit of reading, but I’m happy to be educated if I’ve missed something .

Fairness and equity? Ie what's yours is mine if I deem you have too much of it.

This Labour government is not going to go well.

No, just people paying in to the society that allows them to make their wealth at a level commensurate with that wealth.

So you can only make enough money that the Labour Party deems appropriate and not a penny more otherwise we will have it off you.

There's quite a lot of information about the experience of certain countries in the last century that shows you how successful (or unsuccessful) that policy is in creating wealth for a country overall.

Ok. You want to go back to Dickensian Britain. Fine. Most of us don’t.

Hardly. I just think the most successful proven method of raising standards and overall wealth in a country is capitalism. It has many flaws but it is the most successful overall. Proper socialism never works in any country. Labour always trash the economy historically and this shower will be no different. The Conservatives made a pigs ear of it because of the bad effects of covid (we always knew it was going to be bad ) and because they were not proper Conservatives.

Anyway I don't want to argue about this with you as I appreciate your beliefs , while utterly misguided of course, are sincerely held and its a Friday evening.

Nobody is aiming for socialism though. And I’ll ignore your horrifically patronising tone, because it’s Friday evening and you don’t have anything better.
