Some 4.39pc of all deaths resulted in an inheritance tax bill in 2021-22 – a total of 27,800, according to official figures.

If your guess was higher, pick YANBU
if your guess was lower pick YABU

(I would have guessed higher, maybe even up to 50%

I knew it was 4 per cent ish as I read the news over last few days. I think the very rich will manage loopholes tbh so it’ll still just be the moderately wealthy who get caught out as the bpr changes.

I knew that figure.

I don't disagree with taxing inherited, unearned wealth - but I do think it's disproportionate/unfair for homeowners in the SE. You can 'hide' money apart from the value of your home - and if you live in the SE, a reasonably standard home will cost more than the threshold for IHT. I think this should be taken into account.

Good point.
In expensive housing areas many people pay a disproportionate amount of their income in housing costs. Eg London, SE, Cambridge, Brighton, Bristol etc.
Then they are more likely to pay IHT.
Many 3 bed houses in London are worth over £1m , exceeding the married couple nil band.
Many flats are over £325k, exceeding a single person with no children/grandchildren nil band rate.

Kind of irrelevant as was speaking about the fathers assets anyway.

Not at all, you seem to forget that people have two parents.

The talk of £1 million is due to the fact that this is from a married couple ie two people who get £500k allowance each. People don't get an extra allowance just because they're married.

Even if there were 2 parents ( not in case I was talking about) then it's irrelevant if the 2,nd parent doesn't own anything
