Too old? Trick or treating

Looneymahooney · 30/10/2024 21:54

Quick question.

My 13-year-old daughter would like us to go trick or treating tomorrow. By us, I mean me and my 4 month old.

Are we out of the age brackets for trick or treating?

It's fine...take her!

CuriousGeorge80 · 30/10/2024 21:55

Totally fine in my experience. Enjoy it!

noworklifebalance · 30/10/2024 21:56

I think it is too old. I have teens/tweens and when I see children of this age knocking on strangers’ doors for sweets I think it looks a bit grabby tbh.

Hankunamatata · 30/10/2024 21:56

I'm taking my 14 year old and 11 year old. Can't imagine they won't want to go next year.

FestiveBakewell · 30/10/2024 21:56

it’s fine my 13 year old will be coming but that’s because i am taking my 7 year old personally wouldn’t take a 13 year old if youngest was only 4m but that’s just me

MumonabikeE5 · 30/10/2024 21:57

Does she plan to wear a proper costume? Like a witch with a hat and dress and green face etc?
if so then yes, put a pumpkin onesie on the baby and go for it!
but if she’s too old for dress up, then she’s too old for trick or treating.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 30/10/2024 21:57

I think it is fine too as long as she's dressing up.

If it was just an adult with a four month old I would find it odd, but 13 is perfectly OK. I think my DC were 14 or 15 the last time they went out trick or treating with their friends.

Hankunamatata · 30/10/2024 21:58

And my 14 and 11 yr old have full costumes they have put together and so much fake blood

Singleandproud · 30/10/2024 21:59

Around here they tend to go trick or treating until year 8 and then move to the Fright Nights events at the local Theme Park instead

toastandtwo · 30/10/2024 21:59

I went out all through my adolescence. We always made a massive effort with costumes and folk really loved it. I’m always happy to get teens as long as they’re dressed up.

MagicianMoth · 30/10/2024 21:59

Round here 13 would be too old, I would say almost all are primary school age - my 14 year old stopped a few years ago.

Trickabrick · 30/10/2024 22:01

In my area, kids stop doing it once they’re at secondary, I think it’s too old personally at 13.

Looneymahooney · 30/10/2024 22:02

OK thanks guys!! Feeling reassured. Yes we'll all be dressing up!

We have all ages round our way. It's great fun seeing the youngsters enjoying themselves.

Nourishinghandcream · 30/10/2024 22:03

It is fine, have a great evening.👍

We have kids & teenagers ringing the bell but as long as they have entered into the spirit of things and are wearing a good costume they are as welcome to our sweets as anyone else.
In fact, the older ones seem to make it a competition to see who can look the most gruesome and some of them are very skilled with the make-up & costumes.

EconomyClassRockstar · 30/10/2024 22:05

I'm in the US and the teens definitely still get fully dressed up and go trick or treating here. There's a whole meme that goes around every year about how teens are choosing to partake in a part of their childhood when there are a million and one other things they could be doing, so feed them the damn candy!

This. I'll happily hand out the goodies to anyone who's made an effort.

My (just) 15yo ds is going with 2 friends tomorrow. It'll probably be his last year so I told him to enjoy it!

13 is fine.

ProvincialLady24 · 30/10/2024 22:08

I wouldn't let them go alone. In my daughter's' experiences the dads/men start to make inappropriate comments

itsalwaysthesame · 30/10/2024 22:10

I'm taking my 12 & 9yo out tomorrow, she's quite a young 12 and she'll be wearing a creepy doll costume which she put together herself, I don't mind if older kids come and knock but dislike big groups of more than 4 as it can be intimidating for some (not me I'm out with the kids so husband on door duty)

Feellikeafailurenow · 30/10/2024 22:10

I’d say it’s too old. My dd was 13 last year & round with younger siblings 8/10 & didn’t get sweets at most houses & here we only answer to younger kids. As your 4m old won’t be eating the sweets i wouldn’t give one of my bags as they’re for smaller kids

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 30/10/2024 22:16

I don't vet by age, I do by time. My pumpkin comes in at 7pm and I do not answer the door after that. If 14 yos want to knock early, great, but I'm not entertaining teenage dickheads in scream masks until all hours.

user2848502016 · 30/10/2024 22:18

It's fine, my 13 year old is going. Probably the last year for her though

AlmostAJillSandwich · 30/10/2024 22:21

Round here they always expect money not sweets, even 20 something years ago that was the "norm". Think can count on one hand the number of knocks in the past 5 years though, its just not the area for it anymore.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 30/10/2024 22:23

It's fine. We always get loads of younger teenagers where we are and every single year there will be a post on the local FB page saying how polite and lovely the older ones were. As long as they're dressing up and being polite I don't care how old they are!
