We began to walk, the darkness seeming to steal all the air. The hooves were fading away now but replaced by another sound. This one was quieter but heavier and we were walking toward it now.....

Not last night but the (dark and stormy) night before, three wee witches came to my door.
One had a fiddle, one had a drum, one had a pancake stuck to her bum.

The gamekeeper lowered his long rifle. "This is private property. Thy'd do as well to stay out. If it's a tavern thy's wanting, go back t'village. There's Devil's Corner wher'd Hepzibah'll see you a good spread."

He hurried behind us. "She's a good woman Hepzibah is and my natural daughter. They all took on so after she was born with t'hare lip. Her mother was a beauty in her day and I never saw the consequences of consorting with that ilk."
